Funds ranger patrols and satellite monitoring in indigenous-managed forest reserves facing active illegal logging pressure.
Why this matters in Brazil
Indigenous territories are among the strongest barriers to deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon, and satellite records show far less forest loss inside their boundaries than in surrounding land. That makes them targets. Illegal loggers, land grabbers and gold miners push into reserves along roads and rivers, and enforcement by federal agencies such as Ibama and Funai is limited by staff, budgets and the sheer size of the areas involved.
Invasions surged in 2019 to 2022, when federal enforcement weakened, and the pressure has not gone away since policy shifted again in 2023. Communities are usually the first to see their forest being taken, but a report of an invasion achieves little without evidence: coordinates, dates and images. Indigenous monitors who patrol their own territory and document incursions, backed by satellite alerts, give prosecutors and enforcement agencies something they can act on, and give communities a record of what is happening on their land.
What your gift pays for
- Fuel, boats and field equipment for indigenous monitoring teams patrolling territory boundaries
- GPS units, smartphones and drones for documenting incursions with location data
- Satellite image analysis that flags new clearings for teams to verify on the ground
- Training for indigenous monitors in mapping, data collection and personal safety
Organization
Instituto Socioambiental (ISA) · Brazil
Founded 1994 · Headquarters: São Paulo
Brazilian NGO supporting indigenous territories with monitoring against illegal logging and invasions.
How they work: Instituto Socioambiental works in partnership with indigenous and traditional peoples' associations rather than in their place, with long-running programs in regions such as the Xingu, the Rio Negro and the Vale do Ribeira. It combines legal and policy work in Brasília with field support for community-led territorial management plans, monitoring and income projects such as the Xingu Seed Network, which collects native seeds for forest restoration. Its maps and data are widely used by journalists and public authorities.
Track record: Since January 2018 ISA's Sirad X system has monitored deforestation in the Xingu basin, recording 28,700 hectares cleared in July-August 2021, including in indigenous lands.

Giving in Brazil
Inequality and the Amazon frame the three Brazilian causes, which work at very different scales. Evening classes give adults who left school early to work a second chance at finishing secondary education. Indigenous-managed forest reserves facing illegal logging receive ranger patrols and satellite monitoring through Instituto Socioambiental. A research fund backs work on neglected tropical diseases that mostly affect low-income populations and draw little global funding, with the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative as partner.
3 causes are listed in Brazil, each with its own verified organization. $357,787 has been distributed to causes in Brazil since 2021.
