Privacy Policy

Last updated: September 21, 2024

1. Scope of this policy

This Privacy Policy explains how Global Relief Group, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (EIN 27-3281810), doing business as DonateCrypto ("DonateCrypto," "we," "us," or "our"), collects, uses, and protects information when you visit donatecrypto.co or use the donation platform (together, the "Platform"). It should be read alongside our Terms of Use.

2. Information we collect

We collect information you choose to give us directly through the Platform:

WhatWhenWhy
Email addressConfirmation step (optional)To send you a donation receipt
Email addressNewsletter signup (optional)To send occasional updates on causes and impact
A message you writeConfirmation step (optional)Sent directly to our team; see Section 8 of our Terms of Use
Transaction ID and, if uploaded, proof-of-payment imageConfirmation stepTo match your donation to a cause and your donor record
Account login and donation historyIf you create an accountTo show you your own past donations

We also automatically collect standard technical information common to most websites — such as IP address, browser type, and pages visited — through cookies and similar technologies, as described in Section 5.

3. Information we do not collect

We do not collect or have access to your cryptocurrency wallet's private keys or seed phrase. We do not process or store payment card numbers, since the Platform does not use a card network or payment processor — donations move directly as cryptocurrency.

4. How we use your information

We use the information described in Section 2 to: confirm and record your donation, send a receipt if you requested one, respond to messages you send us, send newsletter updates if you opted in, maintain your account donation history if you have an account, and improve the Platform. We do not use your information to make automated decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects on you.

5. Cookies and tracking

The Platform uses cookies to remember your preferences, support basic site functionality, and — with your consent — to understand how visitors use the site through Google Analytics. When you first visit, you can choose to Accept All, Reject All, or Customize which categories of cookies you allow. Necessary cookies, which support core site functions, do not require consent and cannot be disabled through this tool. Analytics cookies, which power Google Analytics, only run if you accept that category. You can change your cookie choices at any time; see our Cookie Policy for details on each category.

6. Third-party service providers

We use a small number of third-party services to operate the Platform:

  • WP Mail SMTP — delivers receipt and newsletter emails
  • Google Analytics — collects information about how visitors use the Platform (such as pages viewed and time spent on the site) using cookies, to help us understand and improve the donor experience. Google Analytics may collect your IP address and device information. See Google's Privacy Policy for how Google handles this data.
  • A cookie consent management tool — powers the preference banner described in Section 5

These providers process information only as needed to perform their service for us and are not permitted to use it for their own advertising purposes. Google Analytics only runs if you have consented to analytics cookies through the preference banner; see Section 5.

7. When we share information

We do not sell your personal information. We do not forward your name, email, or message to the cause you supported — as stated in our Terms of Use, a donor message stays with our team. We may share information with service providers described in Section 6, or when required by law, subpoena, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of DonateCrypto, our donors, or others.

8. Blockchain data is not private

Cryptocurrency donations are recorded on a public blockchain. The wallet address you send from, the amount, and the transaction itself are publicly visible to anyone, independent of anything we do — this is a property of the blockchain, not a choice we make. Do not treat a blockchain transaction as private. We do not control, and cannot remove, information recorded on a public blockchain.

9. Data retention

We retain donor information for 7 years from the date of your last donation, consistent with standard nonprofit financial recordkeeping practice, after which it is deleted unless a longer period is required by law. Newsletter email addresses are retained until you unsubscribe. You may request earlier deletion of information that isn't required for these purposes; see Section 10.

10. Your rights and choices

You may opt out of newsletter emails at any time via the unsubscribe link in any email we send. Note that we cannot delete or alter information already recorded on a public blockchain, as described in Section 8. Additional rights depending on where you live are described below.

11. GDPR rights (EU / UK / EEA visitors)

If you are located in the EU, UK, or EEA, we process your personal information based on: your consent (for example, when you opt into the newsletter or submit a donor message), performance of a contract (processing your donation confirmation), compliance with our legal obligations (nonprofit recordkeeping), and our legitimate interests in operating the Platform securely. Under the GDPR, you have the right to:

  • Be informed about how your data is collected and used (this policy)
  • Access the personal information we hold about you
  • Rectification of inaccurate information
  • Erasure of your information, subject to Section 8's blockchain limitation
  • Restrict how we process your information
  • Data portability — receive your information in a portable format
  • Object to processing based on legitimate interests
  • Not be subject to solely automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects (we do not engage in this, as noted in Section 4)

To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details in Section 17.

12. California privacy rights (CCPA/CPRA)

If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information we collect, request access to it, request correction, and request deletion (subject to the blockchain and recordkeeping limitations described above). You have the right to know whether we sell or share personal information — we do not, and have never sold your personal information. You will not receive discriminatory treatment for exercising any of these rights. To submit a request, email us at the address in Section 17.

13. Children's privacy

The Platform is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

14. International donors

The Platform is operated from the United States. If you access it from outside the United States, your information will be processed in the United States, which may have different data protection laws than your home country.

15. Data security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect the information we collect. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

16. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date above, and where a change affects how we use information we previously collected from you, we will make reasonable efforts to notify you directly. Continued use of the Platform after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
