Donate Crypto to Tuvalu: Supporting Climate Adaptation

Donate Crypto for Tuvalu: Island Climate Adaptation Fund

If you want to donate crypto to Tuvalu, it helps to understand how close daily life there is to the ocean. Tuvalu is an atoll nation of nine inhabited islands. Its highest point is just 4.5 metres above sea level and much of the land sits at around 1.2 metres, according to a 2021 Pacific Islands News Association report drawing on IPCC findings. The same report notes that sea levels around Tuvalu rose by around 20 cm between 1901 and 2018, with a further 15–25 cm expected by 2050.

Rising seas affect more than the shoreline. As the Global Environment Facility and UNDP have described, higher sea levels increase the salinity of groundwater, so Tuvaluans can no longer rely on it for drinking and depend almost entirely on rainwater collected and stored in tanks. Saltier soils also make it harder to grow crops.

That reliance on rain leaves households exposed when the weather turns dry. In 2011 Tuvalu went through one of its driest spells ever, with very little rainfall over six months, and the country declared a national state of emergency; at the height of the drought the ration fell to two buckets of water per household per day. Raising land above future sea levels and protecting the coast are two of the most direct ways to keep communities safe where they live.

Causes you can support in Tuvalu

Island Climate Adaptation Fund

This fund supports coastal protection and raised, reclaimed land for low-lying island communities in Tuvalu that face sea-level rise and storm surge. Coastal protection works help shield homes and roads from storm surge and wave overtopping, while raised land on Funafuti is built to stay above projected sea levels beyond 2100.

Tuvalu’s land rises only a few metres above the sea, with much of it at around 1.2 metres, and sea levels around the islands rose by around 20 cm between 1901 and 2018, with a further 15–25 cm expected by 2050 (PINA, citing IPCC).
