Funds coastal protection and raised, reclaimed land for low-lying island communities in Tuvalu facing sea-level rise and storm surge.
Why this matters in Tuvalu
Nowhere on the nine atolls and reef islands rises much more than a few meters above the sea, and on Fogafale, the strip of land that holds most of the capital's homes and services, some sections are only a few dozen meters wide. King tides already push seawater up through porous coral ground and across roads and gardens, and storm surges from Cyclone Pam in 2015 damaged homes and crops on several islands. Each increment of sea-level rise makes these events more frequent.
Fresh water is just as fragile. Groundwater lenses are thin and easily turned brackish, so households depend on rain caught from roofs and stored in tanks, and dry spells quickly become emergencies, as in the 2011 drought. Outer islands, reached only by infrequent boat, are the most exposed. Building new land and seawalls is costly, beyond what a national budget this small can carry, and every material has to be shipped in and every project planned around scarce space.
What your gift pays for
- Coastal protection works that shield homes and roads from storm surge and wave overtopping
- Raised land on Funafuti built to stay above projected sea levels beyond 2100
- Surveys and engineering studies that guide where land is raised and defenses placed
- Community consultations on how new raised land is allocated and used
Organization
UNDP Pacific – Tuvalu Coastal Adaptation Project (TCAP) · Tuvalu
UN agency
Founded 2017 · Headquarters: Funafuti
UNDP-supported project with the Tuvalu government delivering coastal protection and reclaimed land.
How they work: The project is financed mainly by the Green Climate Fund, with the Australian government funding its additional reclamation phase, and is carried out by the national government with UNDP. Besides land reclamation on Funafuti, it has built coastal defenses on the outer islands of Nanumea and Nanumaga, and it supported the preparation of the country's Long-Term Adaptation Plan, which sets out how communities can adapt over the coming decades.
Track record: TCAP has reclaimed 15.3 hectares of raised land on Fogafale, Funafuti (7.3 ha in Phase 1, 8 ha in TCAP 1A), designed to stay above projected sea levels beyond 2100.

Giving in Tuvalu
Few places are as exposed to sea-level rise as Tuvalu, a nation of low-lying atolls and reef islands in the Pacific. This fund supports the Tuvalu Coastal Adaptation Project, run with UNDP, which builds coastal protection and raised, reclaimed land for island communities. At present it is the one cause on our Tuvalu list. Others may be added there as further partners are vetted.
This is currently the only cause we list in Tuvalu. $93,861 has been distributed to causes in Tuvalu since 2021.
