Why this matters in the United Kingdom
Young people referred to child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) in England are often told the wait for a first appointment will run to months, and referral thresholds are high, so many with moderate anxiety or low mood are not accepted at all. For a 15-year-old, a year can cover exams, a change of school or the loss of a friendship group, and symptoms rarely stand still in the meantime.
Turning 18 creates a second gap. Young adults can fall between children's and adult services, which have different criteria and separate lists. Those least likely to get help include young people outside school or work, young carers, and those who cannot easily talk at home. Free, short-term counseling reached from a phone, without a referral and outside school hours, gives them somewhere to start while they wait for specialist care, and can stop a difficult period becoming a crisis.
What your gift pays for
- Short courses of counseling with qualified counselors by phone or online
- Helpline and webchat staff answering young people, including in the evenings
- Clinical supervision and training that keep counseling safe and consistent
- Moderation of peer support spaces where young people talk with others in similar situations
Organization
The Mix · United Kingdom
Charity Commission for England and Wales · No. 1175670
Founded 1995 · Headquarters: London
Charity offering free short-term counselling and support to under-25s.
How they work: The Mix works entirely through digital and phone channels, which suits young people who want to stay anonymous or cannot attend a service in person. Young people can start with articles, peer community chats or the helpline and webchat, and be offered a short course of counseling where needed. In 2024 it merged with Mental Health Innovations, the charity behind the Shout text support service, bringing crisis text support and The Mix's services under one organization.
Track record: The Mix's helpline gave free, anonymous online support to over 43,000 young people aged 25 and under from 2018 to 2023, on issues incl. anxiety, depression and loneliness.

Giving in the United Kingdom
Long waits and stretched budgets connect most of the British causes here. Several respond to NHS waiting lists in England, including the more than 550,000 children and young people waiting for mental health support, while others address rough sleeping, food bank demand still far above pre-pandemic levels, unlawful evictions and winter warmth for low-income pensioners. Youth employment, foster care, regional theatres and rare genetic disease research round out the range, with established charities such as The Trussell Trust, St Mungo's, Shelter and Age UK as partners.
19 causes are listed in the United Kingdom, each with its own verified organization. $1,137,510 has been distributed to causes in the United Kingdom since 2021.
