Why this matters in Finland

A teenager who starts skipping classes because of anxiety usually meets help first inside the school building, from a school nurse, psychologist or school social worker. Since 2023 those student welfare posts have been run by the new wellbeing services counties, and staffing still differs from one area to the next. A pupil in a small municipality can wait much longer for a first conversation than a peer in a large city school, while specialist youth psychiatry sits further away again, with referral thresholds that leave many moderate cases in between.

Money worries at home make the gap wider. When parents lose work, the strain reaches children, and older students start to doubt whether study will lead to a job. University of Eastern Finland researchers have reported that more children and adolescents than ever are using mental health services, and the national public health institute has called the youth system confusing. Counseling that is free, early and close to where young people already spend their day can stop a hard term from turning into a psychiatric referral.

What your gift pays for

  • Support groups and activities run by local member associations for young people facing loneliness
  • Coping-skills lessons that help pupils recognize stress, loneliness and low mood before they escalate
  • Staffing for anonymous chat and crisis counseling during evenings, weekends and school holidays
  • Short courses for teachers and youth workers on spotting distress and making a good referral

Organization

MIELI Mental Health Finland · Finland

Finnish Business Information System · No. 0202225-4

Founded 1897 · Headquarters: Helsinki

Finnish mental health NGO running youth mental health support work.

How they work: MIELI pairs national services with a network of local member associations. Its crisis helpline takes calls in several languages, including Finnish, Swedish and English, and it coordinates Sekasin, an anonymous chat for 12- to 29-year-olds answered by trained staff and volunteers. In schools its focus is prevention: it produces mental health skills materials that teachers use in ordinary lessons and trains the adults around children. None of this requires a diagnosis or a doctor's referral, which keeps the first step small.

Track record: Works to prevent loneliness, bullying and social isolation among children and adolescents, and offers mental health coping-skills education and crisis counselling.

Giving in Finland

Rising youth joblessness, at a time when Finland has one of the highest unemployment rates in the OECD, connects two of the Finnish causes. Vamos, run by the Helsinki Deaconess Foundation, provides job-readiness training for young jobseekers, and MIELI Mental Health Finland provides early mental health support for young people, from anonymous chat to coping-skills lessons in schools. The third looks to the land, protecting peatlands and boreal forests that store carbon and support biodiversity, through the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation.

3 causes are listed in Finland, each with its own verified organization. $204,461 has been distributed to causes in Finland since 2021.
