Funds free or low-cost mental health support for young people aged 12 to 25 in regional and rural areas, where public waiting lists can stretch for months.
Why this matters in Australia
Mental health conditions most often begin before the age of 25, and early help shapes whether a young person stays in school, training or work. Outside the major cities, that help is harder to reach. Private psychologists and psychiatrists cluster in metropolitan areas, Medicare rebates rarely cover the full fee, and public child and youth mental health services prioritize the most acute cases, leaving those with moderate anxiety or depression on long waiting lists. A teenager in a farming district or mining town may face hours of travel to the nearest clinician.
Distance also sharpens stigma. In small communities, being seen walking into a mental health service can feel exposing, and young people often wait until a crisis before seeking care. Rural suicide rates are higher than urban ones, and drought, bushfires and floods have added pressure in many regions. Bridging the months between referral and treatment, with sessions that are free or low cost to the family, keeps problems from becoming entrenched while a young person waits.
What your gift pays for
- Free or low-cost counselling sessions at regional centers for young people facing long public waits
- Telehealth and online sessions for those living far from the nearest center
- Clinician outreach visits to smaller towns without a local service
- Family sessions that help parents and carers respond to a young person's distress
Organization
headspace (National Youth Mental Health Foundation) · Australia
Australian Business Register / ACNC · No. ABN 26 137 533 843
Founded 2006 · Headquarters: Melbourne
Provides free or low-cost youth mental health services through centres including regional areas.
How they work: Each headspace center offers young people aged 12 to 25 support across four areas: mental health, physical and sexual health, alcohol and other drug use, and work and study. Centers are run by local lead organizations commissioned through regional Primary Health Networks, so services reflect their communities, and young people can attend without a doctor's referral. For those who cannot reach a center, eheadspace provides free online and phone counselling seven days a week.
Track record: In 2020-21 headspace supported more than 100,000 young people through 135 sites in metropolitan, regional and rural Australia, and 707,425 since 2006.

Giving in Australia
Distance from services links three of the four Australian causes. Young people in regional and rural areas face long public mental health waits, which headspace helps bridge with free or low-cost support, and elderly residents in remote areas without a local care facility receive mobile aged care through Silverchain. Adults who left school early can take free or low-cost classes in literacy, numeracy and digital skills. The fourth cause, with AIATSIS, preserves and digitizes Aboriginal oral history and cultural artifacts at risk of being lost.
4 causes are listed in Australia, each with its own verified organization. $285,985 has been distributed to causes in Australia since 2021.
