Why this matters in Kenya

Tens of thousands of Kenyan children have grown up in charitable children's institutions, many of them not orphans but placed there because of poverty, disability or family breakdown. When they reach 18, most leave with little preparation. Some have lost contact with relatives, have no identity documents or savings, and have never paid rent, cooked for themselves or looked for a job.

The government has committed to moving away from institutional care toward family- and community-based care, a reform that should mean fewer children growing up in institutions in future. The young people already leaving still need somewhere to live. Without family to return to, many end up in informal settlements, in unsafe shared rooms or on the street, and young women face particular risk of exploitation. Guidance and peer support at this stage help a care leaver obtain documents, finish training and find work before facing the rental market alone.

What your gift pays for

  • Peer mentors who have left care themselves and stay in contact after the move
  • Help obtaining identity cards and birth certificates needed for jobs, bank accounts and further training
  • Life-skills sessions on budgeting, cooking, tenancy and job searching, led by trained facilitators
  • Links to livelihood and skills opportunities that help care leavers earn enough to pay rent

Organization

Kenya Society of Care Leavers (KESCA) · Kenya

Founded 2007 · Headquarters: Nairobi

Care-leaver-led Kenyan organization supporting young people leaving institutional care with transition, livelihood and advocacy support.

How they work: KESCA is led by care leavers and organized as a membership network, so the young people it supports gain contact with others who have been through the same transition. It runs support groups and mentoring, connects members with livelihood and skills opportunities, and speaks for care leavers in the national care reform process, bringing their experience to government and child-protection bodies working on how young people leave care.

Track record: Founded in 2007 as a support group of eight care leavers, KESCA grew to 250 members and advocates for young people leaving alternative care across Kenya.

Giving in Kenya

Housing is the dominant theme in Kenya, approached from several directions. Muungano wa Wanavijiji upgrades walkways, lighting and drainage in informal urban settlements instead of clearing them, the Kenya Society of Care Leavers provides peer mentoring and transition support for young people leaving institutional care, and Habitat for Humanity Kenya repairs unsafe rural homes for elderly residents. A fourth cause, with SAPTA, funds outpatient addiction treatment for people who cannot afford private rehabilitation.

4 causes are listed in Kenya, each with its own verified organization. $255,207 has been distributed to causes in Kenya since 2021.
