Funds early-intervention support for young people at risk of homelessness after leaving unstable family situations.
Why this matters in Canada
Young people in Canada often first experience homelessness well before they turn 18, typically after conflict at home, family breakdown, abuse or a parent's own housing crisis. Most do not show up in shelters at first. They couch-surf with friends, stay with an older partner or move between relatives, which hides them from services and exposes them to exploitation. Indigenous and 2SLGBTQ+ youth, and young people leaving child welfare, are heavily overrepresented.
Schools are the systems most likely to notice early, yet the response has historically begun only once a young person is already on the street, through emergency beds or shelters built for adults. Once homelessness sets in, dropping out of school, substance use and contact with police all become more likely, and each makes the way back harder. Prevention aims to keep a young person connected to family, school and community, through family mediation, mentoring or a safe alternative place to stay, before they leave home.
What your gift pays for
- Short school-based surveys that identify students at risk of homelessness before they leave home
- Caseworkers who support young people and their families once risk is identified
- Family mediation sessions that help resolve conflict and make home safe enough to stay
- Short-term alternative accommodation with relatives or host families when home is not safe
Organization
A Way Home Canada · Canada
Canada Revenue Agency (BN) · No. 795393891RR0001
Founded 2015 · Headquarters: Toronto
Canadian national coalition focused on preventing youth homelessness through early intervention and community system change.
How they work: A Way Home Canada works on systems rather than running shelters. With the Canadian Observatory on Homelessness, it develops and tests prevention models with local communities, then shares tools, training and evidence so others can adopt them. Its work includes Housing First for Youth and Family and Natural Supports, a program that helps young people rebuild relationships with family and other trusted adults. It also supports a national network of local A Way Home community coalitions.
Track record: Adapted Australia's Geelong Project as the Upstream Project, a school-based pilot surveying grade 9-12 students to identify youth at risk of homelessness early.

Giving in Canada
Waiting times, housing costs and the opioid crisis connect the Canadian causes. Hope Air helps patients cope with a median 28.6-week wait from GP referral to specialist treatment. A rent bank supports households where full-time minimum-wage work does not cover housing, and A Way Home Canada intervenes early with young people at risk of homelessness. Supervised consumption sites operated by PHS Community Services Society, including Insite in Vancouver, respond to the world's second-highest opioid death rate.
