Why this matters in Venezuela

Venezuela's economy shrank by roughly three-quarters between 2013 and 2021 by most estimates, and years of hyperinflation wiped out savings and wages. More than seven million people have left the country. Many of those who stayed are women supporting children and older relatives, often because partners and grown children have emigrated, and they depend on irregular remittances and whatever they can earn locally.

Formal jobs pay too little to live on, so women turn to food preparation, baking, sewing, beauty services and small-scale resale. These businesses usually start with a few tools and no capital, and bank credit is effectively out of reach in a largely dollarized economy where banks lend very little. Practical training in costing, pricing and selling online helps a woman turn a skill into steady income, reach more customers and keep her household fed without relying entirely on aid.

What your gift pays for

  • Training in business basics, pricing and digital marketing for women starting or growing a small business
  • Course materials and connectivity for classes delivered online as well as in person
  • Follow-up mentoring that helps graduates price products, track sales and reinvest earnings
  • Sessions with men and families on sharing unpaid care work so women have time to earn

Organization

Aliadas en Cadena · Venezuela

Venezuelan NGO providing skills and entrepreneurship training to help vulnerable women become economically active.

How they work: Aliadas en Cadena began by teaching women to use information and communication technology, and it still combines digital skills with business and life-skills training for women in low-income communities. When the pandemic closed its centers it moved courses online and hosted large virtual forums. Its programs also address the unpaid care work that limits women's time for earning, including sessions for men on gender equality and sharing responsibilities at home.

Track record: Aliadas en Cadena runs seven training centres for economically vulnerable women in Venezuela and graduated 432 women during the pandemic, 72% of whom then took up productive work.

Giving in Venezuela

Prolonged economic crisis is the context for both Venezuelan causes. Caritas Venezuela delivers monthly food baskets to households where hyperinflation has left a full-time minimum wage unable to cover basic groceries. Aliadas en Cadena provides business, digital and life-skills training to women who support their families through the crisis. One meets immediate needs while the other helps build an income, and both partners are Venezuelan organizations working inside the country.

2 causes are listed in Venezuela, each with its own verified organization. $242,912 has been distributed to causes in Venezuela since 2021.
