Why this matters in Bolivia

Women in Bolivia's highlands and inter-Andean valleys grow quinoa, potatoes, beans and fruit on small plots, and often keep livestock and make cheese as well. Most sell raw produce to intermediaries at the farm gate or in weekly markets, where buyers set the price and it drops sharply at harvest. Processing such as drying, milling, packaging or turning milk into cheese captures far more of a product's value, but the equipment is beyond the reach of any individual farmer.

Women carry a large share of farm work, especially where men migrate seasonally to cities or abroad, yet they have less access to credit and are less often members of formal producer associations. Equipment owned by a cooperative changes that arithmetic: members pool harvests, meet food safety and labeling rules together, and can sell to shops, municipal school-meal programs and other buyers that will not take loose raw goods.

What your gift pays for

  • Shared processing machinery such as dryers, mills, dehullers or cheese-making equipment, chosen by each cooperative
  • Small processing rooms adapted to meet sanitary registration requirements for packaged food
  • Packaging, labeling and product registration that let cooperatives sell beyond local markets
  • Training in bookkeeping, quality control and equipment maintenance for cooperative members

Supports women's producer groups and rural livelihoods in Bolivia.

How they work: Ayuda en Acción works in Bolivia through long-term programs in specific rural municipalities, usually with local partner organizations and municipal governments. Its economic work follows a value chain approach: helping producer groups improve production, add value through processing, meet quality standards and find buyers, while supporting women's leadership within those groups. Training, technical assistance and shared equipment are usually combined so that groups can run independently once support ends.

Track record: Ayuda en Acción's sustainable value chains programme in Bolivia has engaged 4,056 women producers and reached 2,252 producer families, per its 2025 capacity statement.

Giving in Bolivia

Rural women's economic standing is the focus of two Bolivian causes. Ayuda en Accion funds shared processing equipment so women's agricultural cooperatives can sell processed goods instead of raw crops at lower margins, and Fundacion TIERRA runs research, training and community workshops on rural women's land rights, addressing a documented gap in ownership between women and men. The third, with Fundacion Amigos de la Naturaleza, uses forest monitoring, fire alerts and land-use planning to keep fragmented lowland habitat connected for wildlife.
