Funds food bank restocking during winter months when demand rises among low-income households.
Why this matters in Sweden
Swedish winters push household costs up at exactly the wrong moment. Heating and electricity bills climb, children need warm clothing and boots, and the December holidays add pressure to budgets already stretched by several years of high food prices. For people living on income support, a small pension or low-paid work, groceries are often the one expense that can be squeezed, so meals get smaller or less nutritious.
Social supermarkets fill the space between charity food parcels and ordinary shops. Members buy fully edible surplus food, items with cosmetic flaws, damaged packaging or approaching best-before dates, at well below normal prices, and they choose their own groceries rather than queue for a handout. The model depends on a steady flow of donated surplus, and that flow does not rise automatically when winter demand does. Restocking support during the coldest months keeps shelves full when more members come through the door and supply from retailers is uneven.
What your gift pays for
- Restocking staples such as dairy, bread, fresh produce and protein when surplus donations fall short of winter demand
- Transport and cold-chain handling that move donated surplus from retail partners to store shelves
- Store staffing and opening hours during the busiest winter weeks
- Membership intake for newly eligible low-income households seeking access over the winter
Organization
Matmissionen (Stockholms Stadsmission) · Sweden
Swedish organisationsnummer (Skatteverket/Bolagsverket) · No. 802003-1954
Founded 2015 · Headquarters: Stockholm
Social supermarkets redistributing surplus food at low prices to low-income households in Stockholm and other cities.
How they work: Matmissionen was developed by Stockholms Stadsmission together with the grocery group Axfood, whose Willys chain channels surplus stock to the stores and supports the logistics. Shopping is limited to members who meet criteria such as low income or dependence on benefits, and prices typically run 30-70% below normal retail. The stores also serve as work-integration sites, where people far from the labor market train in warehouse, logistics, sales and customer service roles, and some have moved on to regular jobs.
Track record: In 2023 Matmissionen's 11 social supermarkets handled 4,180 tonnes of food and served about 29,500 members, up from four stores in 2021.

Giving in Sweden
An aging population and long distances in the north shape the Swedish list. Demensforbundet supports early dementia care as the over-80 population grows faster than the care workforce, and a northern regional health authority runs telepsychiatry for residents hours from a specialist. Winter food bank restocking and subsidized meal delivery for isolated seniors complete the four. Partners include a municipality and a regional authority as well as Stockholms Stadsmission, reflecting Sweden's mix of public and charitable provision.
4 causes are listed in Sweden, each with its own verified organization. $438,086 has been distributed to causes in Sweden since 2021.
