Funds forest monitoring, fire alerts and land-use planning that help keep fragmented habitat in Bolivia's eastern lowlands connected for wildlife.
Why this matters in Bolivia
Forest loss in the eastern lowlands has been among the fastest anywhere in recent years. In the department of Santa Cruz, cattle ranching, soy and land clearing by fire push into the Chiquitano dry forest and the southern edge of the Amazon, and fires in 2019 and again in 2024 burned millions of hectares. Clearing rarely removes a forest all at once. It leaves islands, a reserve here and a strip of riverbank there, separated by pasture and fields that jaguars, tapirs, peccaries and many forest birds will not or cannot cross.
Isolated populations shrink, lose genetic diversity and struggle to recover after fire or drought. Protected areas cover only part of the region, and much of the remaining forest sits on private ranches, indigenous territories and community land where land-use rules are weakly enforced. Keeping fragments linked depends on planning: identifying which strips matter most, persuading landholders and municipalities to keep or restore them, and checking that they survive. Without good maps, connections can disappear before anyone notices they existed.
What your gift pays for
- Satellite and field monitoring of forest cover along priority links between protected areas
- Mapping and planning work with municipalities and landholders to keep connecting forest standing
- Fire-risk alerts and prevention support for communities living along corridor edges
- Field surveys recording which species use retained or restored forest links
Organization
Fundación Amigos de la Naturaleza (FAN) · Bolivia
Founded 1989 · Headquarters: Santa Cruz de la Sierra
Bolivian conservation NGO running biodiversity, conservation planning and land-use monitoring (MapBiomas Bolivia) programmes.
How they work: FAN works through information and planning rather than land ownership. Its teams map land-cover change, burn scars and deforestation, and share the results with departmental and municipal governments, indigenous organizations and protected-area managers to shape land-use plans. Fire-risk warnings are issued ahead of and during the burning season so authorities and communities can prepare. Over several decades FAN has also contributed scientific and management support to protected areas in eastern Bolivia.
Track record: FAN works on forest and biodiversity conservation in Bolivia and runs monitoring systems for Amazon fires and deforestation, including the SATRIFO fire-risk early warning system.

Giving in Bolivia
Rural women's economic standing is the focus of two Bolivian causes. Ayuda en Accion funds shared processing equipment so women's agricultural cooperatives can sell processed goods instead of raw crops at lower margins, and Fundacion TIERRA runs research, training and community workshops on rural women's land rights, addressing a documented gap in ownership between women and men. The third, with Fundacion Amigos de la Naturaleza, uses forest monitoring, fire alerts and land-use planning to keep fragmented lowland habitat connected for wildlife.
3 causes are listed in Bolivia, each with its own verified organization. $437,281 has been distributed to causes in Bolivia since 2021.
