When the August 2021 fires swept through northern Evia, they destroyed more than pine forest. Resin collectors, beekeepers and shepherds lost the land and animals their incomes depended on, and many lost homes or barns too. Similar stories followed in 2023 in Evros and on Rhodes. Rural households in these areas are often older, with savings tied up in a flock, a house and a few outbuildings.
Recovery for a farming family takes longer than for a household with a salary. A shepherd who loses sheep or goats loses both the herd's milk income and the years it took to build it, and burned pasture may not support animals for a season or more. State compensation exists but takes time, and in the meantime families may be living in a damaged house or with relatives miles from their land. Shelter near the farm and steady practical help through those months let people stay and restart rather than give up and leave.

How they work: The Hellenic Red Cross works through regional branches and volunteer corps, among them its Samaritans, rescuers and lifeguards, alongside nursing and social welfare services. In wildfire emergencies these units take part in evacuations, run first aid and health posts, distribute food and relief items, and offer psychosocial support to people who have lost homes. Its social welfare services stay involved after the emergency phase, helping affected families with material aid and referrals as they rebuild.
