Why this matters in Greece

Summer fire seasons have grown longer and more destructive. In 2023, a fire that started near Alexandroupoli became the largest recorded in the European Union, burning through Dadia forest and surrounding villages, while thousands of tourists and residents were evacuated from Rhodes. Hotter, drier summers play a part, but so does land use: as villages empty and grazing declines, scrub and dead wood build up on hillsides that were once grazed, farmed or cut for fuel.

Most public spending goes on fighting fires rather than preventing them. Firebreaks need regular clearing, forest roads need maintenance so crews can get in, and lookouts need to be staffed through the hottest weeks, yet these tasks often fall between agencies or wait for funding that arrives late. After a fire, rushed replanting can do more harm than good where forests would regenerate naturally. Prevention work and careful post-fire planning both depend on local people who know the terrain.

What your gift pays for

  • Clearing and maintenance of firebreaks and forest access paths before summer
  • Equipment and training for volunteer forest protection and fire-watch groups
  • Post-fire assessments that guide whether burned land is left to regenerate or replanted
  • Public education on fire risk for residents and visitors in high-risk areas

Organization

WWF Greece · Greece

Greek association registration · No. 22/18-01-1994 & 790/22-06-2001

Founded 1995 · Headquarters: Athens

Works on forest fire prevention and landscape management before fire seasons.

How they work: WWF Greece treats prevention as the priority and works through its Forests for the Future program. A central element is support for volunteer forest protection groups: the organization has assessed and equipped such groups, run firefighting workshops and backed pilot schemes where volunteers patrol, keep watch and maintain paths. It publishes research on the causes and consequences of fires, including the Pyroskopio database used by authorities, and runs awareness and education campaigns, with fieldwork in mountain ranges such as Grammos, Pindus and Taygetus.

Track record: Between 2007 and 2012 WWF Greece produced 12 post-fire assessments, covering areas such as the Peloponnese, Euboea and Rhodes; its natural-regeneration proposals were adopted in several areas.

Giving in Greece

Climate-related disasters account for every Greek cause listed. Two respond to wildfire seasons that have grown more severe over the past decade, funding temporary shelter and relief supplies for rural households, and firebreak maintenance with volunteer forest protection groups. Two address flooding, one with home repair grants and the other with early warning, stream-bed clearing and evacuation drills. Partners combine the Hellenic Red Cross and WWF Greece with national civil protection authorities, covering both recovery and prevention.

4 causes are listed in Greece, each with its own verified organization. $334,851 has been distributed to causes in Greece since 2021.
