Funds legal aid helping widows secure inheritance rights often contested under customary land practices.
Why this matters in Nepal
Nepal has a large population of widows, and their number rose after the 1996–2006 armed conflict and again after the 2015 earthquakes. Many are young. Under customary practice, a widow's place in her husband's family, and her access to his land and house, can depend on her in-laws' goodwill. Some are pressured to leave, to remarry within the family or to sign away property, and stigma around widowhood, including restrictions on dress and on joining festivals, persists in many communities.
The law has moved a long way. The rule that once made a widow wait until age 35 to claim her share of her husband's property has been abolished, and the 2017 Civil Code sets out equal inheritance rights. Enforcement lags behind. Widows often lack the citizenship certificate, marriage registration or death certificate needed to transfer land, and district offices and courts can be distant and intimidating. Legal aid turns a right on paper into a title in a woman's own name.

Organization
Women for Human Rights, single women group (WHR) · Nepal
Founded 1994 · Headquarters: Kathmandu
Nepali NGO founded by Lily Thapa that advocates for single women/widows, including their property and inheritance rights.
How they work: WHR organizes single women into groups at village, district and national levels, so that widows who have already dealt with in-laws, land offices and courts can support others facing the same problems. These groups identify cases, accompany women to government offices and refer them for legal help. WHR pairs this grassroots network with national advocacy, including its campaign to replace the stigmatizing word 'bidhawa' with 'single women'.
Track record: Registered in 1994, WHR has over 100,000 single women members and won reform of laws, including ending the age-35 rule for widows to inherit their husbands' property.

Giving in Nepal
Mountain geography and migration run through the four Nepali causes. One places teaching Fellows in rural public schools, including in earthquake-affected districts, where qualified teachers are scarce; another protects Himalayan watersheds strained by glacial melt and erosion. Two focus on women: legal briefings before women leave for domestic work abroad, and legal aid for widows whose inheritance rights are contested under customary land practices. Partners are mostly Nepali organizations, including Teach For Nepal, Pourakhi Nepal and Women for Human Rights, alongside WWF Nepal.
4 causes are listed in Nepal, each with its own verified organization. $386,692 has been distributed to causes in Nepal since 2021.
