Why this matters in the United States

Wildfire seasons in the western states now start earlier, last longer and reach places that once felt safe. The January 2025 fires in Los Angeles County destroyed more than 16,000 structures across the Palisades and Eaton burn areas, and towns such as Paradise in California and Talent and Phoenix in Oregon have shown how quickly whole neighborhoods can vanish. Displaced households need somewhere to live for months, often years, while debris is cleared, soil is tested and permits are issued.

Insurance rarely closes the gap. Many homeowners in high-risk areas have been dropped by private insurers and moved to state FAIR Plan policies with lower limits, and some had no coverage at all. Renters lose belongings and deposits, and nearby rents jump as thousands of displaced families compete for the same units. Federal disaster aid is capped and aimed at basic needs, so lower-income, older and uninsured residents face the longest recoveries and the greatest risk of leaving their communities for good.

What your gift pays for

  • Short-term hotel stays and rent support while families wait for debris removal and permits
  • Recovery grants for households with no insurance or coverage too low to rebuild
  • Replacement of essentials such as clothing, medications and work tools lost in the fire
  • Caseworker time helping families plan recovery and apply for other aid

Organization

American Red Cross · United States

US IRS EIN (American National Red Cross) · No. 53-0196605

Founded 1881 · Headquarters: Washington, D.C.

Runs a long-term recovery grant program for households affected by the 2025 California wildfires.

How they work: Most of the American Red Cross disaster workforce is volunteers. After a wildfire it opens and staffs emergency shelters, often with local governments, and provides meals, health and mental health support, and replacement of lost medications and eyeglasses. Caseworkers then meet households individually to build recovery plans, provide financial assistance and refer them to other agencies, while the organization joins the long-term recovery groups that stay in a community for years.

Track record: After the 2020 western wildfires the Red Cross and partners provided more than 450,100 overnight shelter and hotel stays and about $4.6 million in relief and recovery assistance.

Giving in the United States

Where public systems leave gaps, the American causes on this site step in: rural towns that have lost their only hospital or cannot afford to fix aging water lines, cities where rents have outrun shelter capacity, and counties hit hardest by opioid overdoses. Other funds back veterans, survivors of domestic violence, foster youth aging out of care and Hispanic college students, many of them first-generation. Partners range from national nonprofits such as Meals on Wheels America and the American Red Cross to a federal rural health office and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

24 causes are listed in the United States, each with its own verified organization. $2,628,640 has been distributed to causes in the United States since 2021.
