Funds terracing and erosion control in watershed areas affected by desertification pressure.
Why this matters in Tunisia
Rain falls rarely but hard in the hills of central and northwestern Tunisia, and when it hits bare, overgrazed slopes it tears gullies through farmland and carries soil into rivers. Much of that sediment ends up in reservoirs that supply drinking water and irrigation, steadily cutting their storage capacity. Farmers on marginal land, many growing olives, cereals and fodder on slopes, lose the thin topsoil they rely on, while farther south, wind erosion and drifting sand threaten oases and grazing land.
Climate projections point to hotter, drier conditions and more intense storms, which will speed these processes. Dams and canals built over past decades depend on stable catchments above them. Terraces, stone walls, small check dams and contour benches slow runoff, trap sediment and let water infiltrate, often reviving springs and wells. Traditional systems such as the jessour of the southern mountains show how well this can work, but many structures have fallen into disrepair as rural populations aged or moved to cities, and new works need maintenance to last.
What your gift pays for
- Stone and earth terraces and contour benches built on eroding slopes above farmland
- Gabion check dams that slow flash floods and trap sediment in gullies
- Repair of jessour and other traditional water-harvesting structures in dry uplands
- Fodder shrubs and fruit trees planted to hold soil on treated slopes
Organization
Ministry of Agriculture – DG Aménagement et Conservation des Terres Agricoles (DG ACTA) · Tunisia
Government body
State directorate implementing Tunisia's soil and water conservation strategy (terracing, erosion control).
How they work: DG ACTA sets the national soil and water conservation strategy and plans the works, which are carried out in each governorate by the regional agricultural development commissariats (CRDA). Programs combine mechanical works, such as benches, stone bunds, gabion check dams and groundwater recharge structures, with planting on treated slopes, and many have been co-financed by international lenders and development agencies. Farmers in treated watersheds are increasingly involved in planning and maintaining the structures.
Track record: Tunisia's Ministry of Agriculture soil and water conservation programme treated about 1,856,000 hectares of watersheds through 2011, including 640,641 ha in 2002-2011.

Giving in Tunisia
Jobs for young people and land under pressure from desertification are the two Tunisian themes. EFE-Tunisie runs short vocational courses aimed at youth unemployment, which affects nearly 37 percent of people aged 15 to 24, more than twice the national rate. The agriculture ministry's land conservation directorate funds terracing and erosion control in watersheds facing desertification. One cause invests in people entering the workforce, the other in the soil and water that rural livelihoods depend on.
