Why this matters in Ukraine

Hundreds of thousands of people have served in the armed forces since the full-scale invasion, and the number returning from the front through injury, rotation or demobilization will keep rising for years. Many carry combat stress, sleep problems, grief for fallen comrades and brain injuries from blasts, while families have spent long periods apart and children have grown up with a parent away at war.

State mental health services were never designed for this scale. Psychologists trained in evidence-based trauma therapy remain scarce, especially outside large cities, and waiting for an appointment can take weeks. Many veterans also distrust institutions or fear that seeking psychological help will count against them. Services built by veterans and civilians who understand military life, with no paperwork barrier at the door, often persuade people to accept help they would refuse elsewhere.

What your gift pays for

  • Free sessions with psychologists trained in trauma-focused therapy, for veterans and family members
  • Case managers who meet each visitor and connect them with the right specialist
  • Hotline staff so veterans and relatives can reach a psychologist or lawyer the same day
  • Family days and group activities that help returning soldiers reconnect with partners and children

Organization

Veteran Hub · Ukraine

Founded 2018 · Headquarters: Kyiv

Kyiv-based veterans support space and organisation offering psychological, legal and reintegration services to Ukrainian veterans and their families.

How they work: Veteran Hub was built as a one-stop space: a case manager meets each visitor without an appointment and connects them with psychologists, lawyers, employment advice or partner organizations working under the same roof. The idea is to keep a person within one trusted place instead of sending them across the city between offices. The hub also holds family days and refers veterans to education and business training run elsewhere.

Track record: Veteran Hub runs a daily hotline where psychologists and lawyers support veterans, servicemen and their families, after earlier helping Donbas soldiers adapt to civilian life.

Giving in Ukraine

War shapes every Ukrainian cause on the list. Two support elderly people who stayed in frontline villages, too frail or unwilling to leave, through home-based care and regular supply deliveries. Caritas Ukraine funds church-run shelter and food for displaced families near the front. The remaining two serve veterans: trauma care through Veteran Hub, and prosthetic limbs and physical rehabilitation through Superhumans Center, needs that grow as the fighting continues.

5 causes are listed in Ukraine, each with its own verified organization. $265,284 has been distributed to causes in Ukraine since 2021.
