Funds temporary shelter and relocation support for communities near active volcanoes requiring repeated evacuation.
Why this matters in Indonesia
Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and has more active volcanoes than any other country, with more than a hundred classed as active. Millions of people farm their slopes, because volcanic soil is among the most fertile in the archipelago. Merapi in Central Java, Semeru in East Java, Sinabung in North Sumatra and Lewotobi on Flores have all forced evacuations in recent years, and some villages have had to leave again and again.
Each evacuation is costly for a farming family. Crops go untended, cattle are left behind or sold cheaply, and children miss school while they live in tents or crowded community halls. When an eruption drags on for months, as at Sinabung, temporary camps become long-term homes and governments may eventually move whole villages. Families need decent shelter during each displacement and support to rebuild livelihoods when relocation is permanent, and both tend to receive less funding than the first days of an emergency.

Organization
Palang Merah Indonesia (Indonesian Red Cross) · Indonesia
Law No. 1/2018 on Red Cross Affairs (Indonesia) · No. UU No. 1 Tahun 2018
Founded 1945 · Headquarters: Jakarta
Provides evacuation, shelter and relief for communities displaced by eruptions such as Mount Semeru.
How they work: Palang Merah Indonesia works through branches at provincial and district level, so response teams are usually already close to an affected area. Trained volunteers, organized into its volunteer corps, run evacuations, field kitchens, water trucks, first aid posts and tent camps, and help separated families find one another. PMI operates within the national disaster management system, working alongside the national and district disaster management agencies, and in the recovery phase it supports shelter, water and livelihood projects.
Track record: After the December 2021 Mount Semeru eruption, PMI deployed 40 personnel, sent tents, blankets and mattresses, and set up a public kitchen for evacuees.

Giving in Indonesia
Forests, reefs and the communities that depend on them dominate the Indonesian list. Satellite monitoring and field investigations trace forest loss to palm oil, AMAN supports indigenous communities contesting palm oil and mining concessions, and coral nurseries restore reefs damaged by bleaching and dynamite fishing. Remote island patients receive TB diagnosis and treatment in a country with roughly 10 percent of global cases, while other funds support river monitoring and water testing below polluted rivers and shelter for families evacuated from volcanoes.
