Funds apprenticeship placements in skilled trades for young people who left formal schooling early.
Why this matters in Ghana
A large share of young Ghanaians leave school after junior high, or drop out of senior high, and look for work in an economy where formal jobs are scarce. Most trades are still learned the traditional way: a young person pays a master craftsperson to take them on, often for several years, with little structured teaching and no recognized certificate at the end. Fees, tools and living costs during that period put this route out of reach for the poorest families.
Building activity is strong around Accra, Kumasi and Takoradi, and contractors look for plumbers, electricians, welders and tilers with proven skills, yet many unemployed young people have neither the training nor the certificates to show for it. Public technical and vocational schools exist, but places are limited and admission runs through the national school placement system, which does little for young people who have already dropped out. Structured apprenticeships that combine workshop training with placement on real sites, and end in a recognized qualification, give early school leavers a credible way into a trade.

Organization
Opportunities Industrialization Centre Ghana (OIC Ghana) · Ghana
Founded 1970
Ghanaian vocational/technical training centre network that trains youth in trades (reported training 800 youth in vocational skills).
How they work: OIC Ghana belongs to the Opportunities Industrialization Centers movement that Rev. Leon Sullivan started in Philadelphia in the 1960s on a self-help philosophy. The OIC model pairs technical trade training with preparation in work attitudes, basic literacy and job readiness, followed by help finding employment, so that trainees leave both skilled and ready to hold a job.
Track record: In 2017 OIC Ghana reported 800 out-of-school young people trained in construction trades such as plumbing, carpentry, welding and tiling under its YIEDIE apprenticeship programme.

Giving in Ghana
Practical skills and basic infrastructure are the common thread for Ghana. Public secondary schools receive shared lab equipment so physics and chemistry can be taught hands-on, and young people who left school early gain apprenticeships in skilled trades. Beyond the classroom, boreholes replace unprotected surface water in rural communities, and coastal fishing towns organize plastic cleanups. Partners are Ghanaian bodies, from CAMFED Ghana and OIC Ghana to the Community Water and Sanitation Agency and the grassroots group Plastic Punch.
