Why this matters in Chad

Most rural households depend on boreholes fitted with handpumps, and when a pump breaks a whole village can lose its safe water for months. Spare parts are hard to find outside N'Djamena and a few regional towns, distances are long, and many water committees formed when a borehole was drilled have since stopped collecting fees or lost the one member who knew how to fix the pump. Families then go back to open wells, ponds and seasonal riverbeds.

The eastern provinces have also received several hundred thousand refugees fleeing Sudan's war since 2023, adding strain to water points shared by host villages and new arrivals. Across the Sahel belt, the long dry season pushes up demand just as shallow sources dry out. National budgets for rural water maintenance are small, so repairs depend largely on communities themselves, and committees need training, tools and a working supply chain for parts.

What your gift pays for

  • Spare-parts kits for common handpump models, stocked closer to the villages that need them
  • Training for water committee members in basic pump repair and preventive maintenance
  • Tool sets and transport for area mechanics who service pumps across several villages
  • Bookkeeping training so committees can collect and save small user fees for future repairs

Organization

UNICEF Chad · Chad

UN agency

Headquarters: N'Djamena

UNICEF's Chad office runs emergency and rural WASH programming, including CERF-funded water supply projects in 2024.

How they work: UNICEF works with the national water ministry and NGO partners rather than drilling or repairing on its own, and its rural water work is tied to sanitation and hygiene promotion in schools, health centers and villages. In the east it also supplies water systems for refugee and displaced populations. Training and equipping local committees and mechanics is a standard part of how UNICEF and its partners try to keep repaired pumps working.

Track record: UNICEF Chad built 21 new drinking water points and rehabilitated 5 in Hadjer Lamis and Ouaddai schools, giving 13,640 pupils access to water and sanitation (2021).
