Why this matters in Ukraine
Mines, artillery and drone strikes have left a very large number of soldiers and civilians with amputations, burns and complex limb injuries, many of them young people who will live with these injuries for decades. A first prosthesis is only a beginning: residual limbs change shape in the months after surgery, sockets need refitting, and patients need intensive rehabilitation to walk, work and drive again.
The state does pay for prostheses, but before 2022 the country had relatively few certified prosthetists and few rehabilitation centers equipped for complex blast injuries. Physical and occupational therapy were only recently recognized as distinct professions in the health system, so the trained workforce is still growing. Many patients wait for fittings, travel long distances or go abroad for care, losing time during the months when recovery progresses fastest.

Prosthetics, reconstructive surgery and rehabilitation centre near Lviv providing free care to Ukrainians injured in the war, including soldiers.
How they work: Superhumans treats each patient through a multidisciplinary team: surgeons, prosthetists, physical therapists and psychologists plan care together, from reconstructive surgery to the first steps on a new limb. International specialists work alongside local staff, and the center trains domestic professionals so the expertise stays in the country. Psychological support is built into treatment from the start, not offered as an add-on.
Track record: In 2024 Superhumans Center produced its 1,000th prosthesis, performed 553 reconstructive surgeries and treated about 78 rehabilitation patients a day.
