Funds addiction treatment specifically for veterans, who die of drug overdoses at markedly higher rates than the general population and often face barriers to timely care.
Why this matters in the United States
Military service can leave people with chronic pain, traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress, each of which raises the risk of heavy drinking and opioid misuse. Leaving the military brings its own strain: the loss of a unit and daily structure, a new job search, and sometimes a move far from family. Some veterans first received opioids for service injuries and find that use has turned into dependence by the time they are discharged.
Many veterans never enroll in VA health care, and others live hours from the nearest medical center, particularly in rural areas. Discharge status and service history can limit eligibility, and a military culture that prizes toughness keeps some from admitting they are struggling. Treatment works best when it starts quickly, yet travel, waiting times and paperwork can stall a person at the moment they ask for help. Offering medication for opioid use disorder in ordinary clinics and counseling by video are two ways those delays are being reduced.

Government body
Founded 1930 · Headquarters: Washington, D.C.
Federal agency whose Veterans Health Administration provides substance use treatment for veterans, including outpatient, residential and medication treatment.
How they work: The VA treats substance use within its wider health system rather than as a stand-alone service. Veterans can receive counseling, residential rehabilitation and medication for opioid and alcohol use disorders, and the agency has worked to offer buprenorphine through primary care and general mental health clinics, not only specialty programs. Its Opioid Overdose Education and Naloxone Distribution program supplies naloxone to at-risk veterans at no cost, and telehealth extends counseling to those in rural areas.
Track record: In fiscal year 2018 the VA treated 518,570 veterans diagnosed with a substance use disorder, 152,482 of whom received specialty SUD services.

Giving in the United States
Where public systems leave gaps, the American causes on this site step in: rural towns that have lost their only hospital or cannot afford to fix aging water lines, cities where rents have outrun shelter capacity, and counties hit hardest by opioid overdoses. Other funds back veterans, survivors of domestic violence, foster youth aging out of care and Hispanic college students, many of them first-generation. Partners range from national nonprofits such as Meals on Wheels America and the American Red Cross to a federal rural health office and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
24 causes are listed in the United States, each with its own verified organization. $2,628,640 has been distributed to causes in the United States since 2021.
