Why this matters in the Netherlands

More than half of the country's wild bee species appear on the national Red List, and butterflies have declined steeply over recent decades. Intensive agriculture leaves little flowering vegetation in the countryside, so towns have become relatively important refuges. Yet much public green space is mown short many times a season, sown with grass and maintained for tidiness rather than for nectar or nesting habitat.

Roadside verges, park edges, dike slopes and unused plots owned by municipalities add up to a large area. Managed differently, by mowing less often, removing cuttings to lower soil fertility and leaving some parts uncut through winter, they can support native wildflowers and the insects that depend on them. The obstacles are practical: maintenance contracts written around frequent mowing, crews unfamiliar with ecological methods, and residents unsure whether a long verge is a sign of neglect. Expert advice and demonstration sites help councils change routine practice and link green spaces into corridors insects can move along.

What your gift pays for

  • Native wildflower seed and soil preparation for converting short-mown municipal grass
  • Training for council green-space staff and contractors in ecological mowing methods
  • Butterfly and bee counts that show whether converted sites attract pollinators
  • Signs and resident sessions explaining why some verges are deliberately left long

Organization

De Vlinderstichting (Dutch Butterfly Conservation) · Netherlands

Kamer van Koophandel (KvK) / Belastingdienst RSIN · No. KvK 41048624; RSIN 009193431

Founded 1983 · Headquarters: Wageningen

Dutch NGO advising municipalities on pollinator-friendly verges and wildflower management.

How they work: De Vlinderstichting combines research with practical advice. With large numbers of volunteer recorders, it runs long-term monitoring of butterflies and other insects, which shows where populations are falling and which management helps. For municipalities, water boards and other land managers it recommends methods such as sinusbeheer, a phased mowing system that leaves changing sections uncut each time, and trains the people who carry out the work.

Track record: De Vlinderstichting helps residents, schools and municipalities create flower-rich grassland for butterflies and bees, with 30 sites planned in Zuid-Holland.

Giving in the Netherlands

Water, nature and housing security run through the Dutch causes. With a large share of the country below sea level, restored coastal wetlands serve as flood defense as well as habitat, and unused city land becomes pollinator corridors for declining bee populations. Social causes include adult literacy and Dutch-language classes for newcomers, companionship and practical support that help seniors keep living at home, and rent-arrears mediation by Leger des Heils that heads off evictions. Partners also include Natuurmonumenten and Nationaal Ouderenfonds.

5 causes are listed in the Netherlands, each with its own verified organization. $356,435 has been distributed to causes in the Netherlands since 2021.
