How they work: Food banks in the Trussell network are independent local projects, usually run with churches and volunteers, that work to shared standards. Help is given through referral: frontline professionals such as doctors, social workers and Citizens Advice staff refer a household, and the parcel holds several days of nutritionally balanced, non-perishable food. Many food banks host benefits and debt advisers on site. The Trussell Trust itself supports the network, publishes research on why people need food banks, and campaigns for policy change such as an Essentials Guarantee in Universal Credit.
Track record: Food banks in the Trussell network distributed 2.9 million emergency food parcels between April 2024 and March 2025 through more than 1,400 centres across the UK.
