Why this matters in the Philippines

About twenty tropical cyclones enter the country's area of responsibility in an average year, and the provinces facing the Pacific, such as Catanduanes, Samar, Albay and Cagayan, take repeated hits. In October and November 2024, six storms struck within about four weeks, among them Trami, Kong-rey, Yinxing, Toraji, Usagi and Man-yi, battering some communities again before they had cleaned up from the last one. Island and coastal villages can be cut off for days when ferries stop and roads wash out.

Delay is costly. Relief sent from Manila or regional hubs after landfall may take days to arrive, and in that time families go without clean water, food and dry shelter. Local governments must set aside disaster funds by law, but poorer municipalities have little warehouse space or stock of their own. Holding food, water, hygiene and shelter items close to at-risk communities before the season begins, and releasing them on a forecast, means help can move as soon as it is safe to travel.

What your gift pays for

  • Family food packs and drinking water stored in regional warehouses before typhoon season
  • Hygiene kits, sleeping mats and tarpaulins ready for distribution within hours of landfall
  • Cash transfers released to households on a forecast trigger, ahead of the storm
  • Fuel and maintenance for trucks and water tankers serving isolated villages

Philippine Red Cross · Philippines

Philippine Red Cross Act of 2009 (RA 10072, 20 Apr 2010) · No. Republic Act No. 10072

Founded 1947 · Headquarters: Mandaluyong

Pre-positions relief items and runs anticipatory action ahead of typhoons.

How they work: The Philippine Red Cross works through chapters across the provinces, each drawing on trained local volunteers. With the IFRC it has built an anticipatory action system: when forecasts show a typhoon reaching an agreed strength over a given area, pre-approved funds and stocks are released before landfall for early evacuation, reinforcing homes, protecting livelihoods and cash support. After the storm, the same chapters move into relief, water supply and health services.

Track record: The Philippine Red Cross maintains 8 regional warehouses, 36 food trucks and 29 water tankers, and a network of over 1 million trained volunteers and staff, for typhoon-season readiness.

Giving in the Philippines

Spread across thousands of islands and struck by typhoons several times a year in some provinces, the Philippines poses problems of reach as much as of resources. The causes listed here pre-position relief supplies before typhoon season, build elevated water storage that survives repeated storms, and provide boats so children in remote island and coastal communities can get to secondary school. A fourth supports reporting on corruption through the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism, in a media environment where journalists have faced harassment.

4 causes are listed in the Philippines, each with its own verified organization. $443,453 has been distributed to causes in the Philippines since 2021.
