Why this matters in the Philippines
Communities on the eastern seaboard of the Philippines, in provinces such as Samar, Leyte and Catanduanes and across the Bicol region, face several typhoons in a typical year. A single storm can snap distribution lines, flood wells with seawater or sewage and topple ground-level tanks. Once the winds pass, contaminated water becomes the next danger, and outbreaks of diarrhea and leptospirosis commonly follow floods.
Many barangays rely on small community water systems or communal tanks that were never designed for high winds or storm surge. Local governments rebuild what they can, often to the same design, and the cycle repeats the following season. Raised, anchored tanks and protected pump houses keep water in storage when pipes fail, so households are not left waiting days for trucked supplies while roads are still blocked.

National Red Cross society of the Philippines providing emergency water supply and typhoon preparedness and response.
How they work: The Philippine Red Cross is organized through chapters in provinces and cities, backed by trained community volunteers, including its Red Cross 143 network based in barangays. In disasters it deploys water purification units and bladders from its WASH hubs; between emergencies, chapters run preparedness, hygiene promotion and water system projects with local governments. As an auxiliary to public authorities under its founding law, it coordinates directly with national and local disaster risk reduction councils.
Track record: The Philippine Red Cross operates 17 WASH hubs equipped with mobile water purification systems and emergency water bladders for disaster response.

Giving in the Philippines
Spread across thousands of islands and struck by typhoons several times a year in some provinces, the Philippines poses problems of reach as much as of resources. The causes listed here pre-position relief supplies before typhoon season, build elevated water storage that survives repeated storms, and provide boats so children in remote island and coastal communities can get to secondary school. A fourth supports reporting on corruption through the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism, in a media environment where journalists have faced harassment.
4 causes are listed in the Philippines, each with its own verified organization. $443,453 has been distributed to causes in the Philippines since 2021.
