Why this matters in Palestine
Water-related illness in the Palestinian territories is driven above all by damaged infrastructure. Gaza's coastal aquifer was over-pumped and contaminated by seawater and sewage for years, and the war that began in October 2023 destroyed or disabled much of its water, sewage and desalination capacity. In parts of the West Bank, communities have limited network connections and rely on trucked water and cisterns whose quality is hard to control.
When safe water and sanitation fail, diarrheal disease, hepatitis A, skin infections and other preventable conditions rise, with young children and displaced people at greatest risk. Polio was detected in Gaza in 2024 for the first time in about 25 years, a direct signal of collapsed sanitation. Understanding how contamination spreads, and which interventions cut disease fastest, requires field data on water quality and household practices, gathered by people who know the local systems.
