Funds research into neglected tropical diseases that predominantly affect low-income populations and attract limited global research funding.
Why this matters in Brazil
Chagas disease, leishmaniasis and malaria fall hardest on people with little purchasing power: rural families in mud-walled homes where triatomine bugs hide, farm workers and miners in the Amazon, and residents of poor urban fringes. Because these patients cannot pay high prices, drug companies have had little commercial reason to invest, and several standard treatments are old, toxic, or require long courses that are hard to finish far from a clinic.
Brazil's public health system offers free treatment, yet the tools remain weak. Most people with chronic Chagas are never diagnosed, and the two main drugs, benznidazole and nifurtimox, date from the 1960s and 1970s. Treatment for visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis still often relies on injectable drugs with serious side effects. New research needs patient cohorts, trial sites and regulatory work in endemic areas, and nonprofit drug development fills the gap that the commercial market leaves.
What your gift pays for
- Clinical trial sites, monitoring and patient follow-up in areas where Chagas and leishmaniasis are endemic
- Laboratory work on simpler diagnostic tests and shorter treatment regimens
- Regulatory dossiers and technical support needed to register new treatments
- Training for health workers who diagnose and treat patients in endemic regions
Organization
Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) Latin America · Brazil
Founded 2004 · Headquarters: Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro office of DNDi developing treatments for neglected tropical diseases with Fiocruz and Brazil's health ministry.
How they work: DNDi is a not-for-profit drug developer that works through partnerships rather than its own laboratories. It brings together public research institutes, universities and pharmaceutical companies, shares costs and data, and negotiates for resulting treatments to be affordable and available in endemic countries. In Latin America it coordinates clinical research networks such as the Chagas Clinical Research Platform and redeLEISH, linking clinicians and researchers across several countries, and it pursues shorter, safer regimens of existing drugs alongside new compounds.
Track record: Based in Rio de Janeiro, DNDi Latin America works on Chagas, leishmaniasis and malaria, including a paediatric benznidazole and the ASMQ malaria treatment launched in 2008.

Giving in Brazil
Inequality and the Amazon frame the three Brazilian causes, which work at very different scales. Evening classes give adults who left school early to work a second chance at finishing secondary education. Indigenous-managed forest reserves facing illegal logging receive ranger patrols and satellite monitoring through Instituto Socioambiental. A research fund backs work on neglected tropical diseases that mostly affect low-income populations and draw little global funding, with the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative as partner.
3 causes are listed in Brazil, each with its own verified organization. $357,787 has been distributed to causes in Brazil since 2021.
