Why this matters in South Africa

Townships such as Khayelitsha, Soweto, Alexandra and Umlazi were built under apartheid to house Black workers far from city centers, and they still carry high unemployment, crowded housing and long, costly commutes. Where no adult in a household has steady work, the family often depends on social grants, and the Child Support Grant falls well short of what it costs to feed a growing child. Many children arrive at school or creche having eaten little since the previous day.

The National School Nutrition Programme feeds learners in poorer public schools, but it does not close every gap. Early childhood development centers, where children under six spend their days during the years most important for growth, receive far more limited support, and many informal creches receive none. Hungry children struggle to concentrate, and the country's high rates of childhood stunting show how early undernutrition leaves lasting effects on health and learning.

South Africa DSD NPO register / SARS PBO / CIPC (NPC) · No. NPO 136-386; PBO 930042075; CIPC 2012/168298/08

Founded 2005

US-registered charity funding daily school meals for children in South African townships and rural schools via local partners.

How they work: The Lunchbox Fund does not cook the meals itself. It selects and funds local implementing partners, usually community organizations already working in an area, and those partners buy ingredients and prepare food at schools and early childhood development centers. This keeps decisions about menus and logistics close to the communities served. The organization was founded in 2005 by Topaz Page-Green, a South African-born former model, and raises much of its funding abroad.

Track record: In 2020 The Lunchbox Fund provided daily hot school meals to 25,972 children, supplied 559 schools and delivered over 26 million meals including pandemic relief.

Giving in South Africa

Inequality between townships and the rest of South Africa is the thread through its four causes. Formal unemployment stands at 33.6 percent, the highest of any G20 economy, and the funds respond with surplus food delivered to community kitchens serving informal settlements and daily meals for township children. On the health side, they support integrated treatment for people co-infected with TB and HIV and staffing for overstretched public clinics. Partners are South African organizations such as FoodForward SA and TB HIV Care.

4 causes are listed in South Africa, each with its own verified organization. $394,893 has been distributed to causes in South Africa since 2021.
