Why this matters in the United Kingdom

Private renters in England are living through the largest change to their rights in decades. From 1 May 2026 the Renters' Rights Act abolished section 21 'no-fault' evictions for private tenancies, so landlords must now rely on specific legal grounds. The reform should protect tenants, but only if someone checks whether those grounds are valid, whether notice was served correctly and whether an eviction is lawful at all. Illegal evictions, where a landlord changes the locks, removes belongings or cuts off utilities without a court order, are a criminal offense but still happen.

Housing legal aid remains available to people at risk of losing their home, yet the number of providers holding housing legal aid contracts has fallen sharply since the 2013 cuts, and large parts of the country have few or no local providers. A tenant facing an urgent lockout or a court date may not find a solicitor in time. Paid representation fills the space between what legal aid promises and what is actually available locally.

What your gift pays for

  • Solicitors' time on emergency injunctions that get locked-out tenants back into their homes
  • Representation at possession hearings where a landlord's grounds or paperwork may be invalid
  • Casework on disrepair claims, which often surface when a landlord moves to evict
  • Specialist advice for renters on their rights under the new tenancy rules

Organization

Shelter · United Kingdom

Charity Commission for England and Wales · No. 263710

Founded 1966 · Headquarters: London

Housing and homelessness charity whose Shelter Legal Services provide advice and representation to tenants, including on illegal eviction, in England.

How they work: Shelter pairs a national helpline and online advice with local hubs where advisers and solicitors take on cases in person. When a tenant has been locked out, its lawyers can seek an emergency court injunction to restore access, and they represent tenants at possession hearings, including through duty advice schemes at some county courts. The charity also brings strategic cases and uses what its frontline teams see to campaign for changes to renting law.

Track record: Shelter's legal team of 46 solicitors, 25 legal advisers and 30 support workers challenges illegal evictions and disrepair, helping thousands each year.

Giving in the United Kingdom

Long waits and stretched budgets connect most of the British causes here. Several respond to NHS waiting lists in England, including the more than 550,000 children and young people waiting for mental health support, while others address rough sleeping, food bank demand still far above pre-pandemic levels, unlawful evictions and winter warmth for low-income pensioners. Youth employment, foster care, regional theatres and rare genetic disease research round out the range, with established charities such as The Trussell Trust, St Mungo's, Shelter and Age UK as partners.

19 causes are listed in the United Kingdom, each with its own verified organization. $1,137,510 has been distributed to causes in the United Kingdom since 2021.
