Why this matters in India
Tuberculosis is curable, and the national program provides drugs free of charge, yet many patients never finish treatment. The standard course for drug-sensitive TB lasts six months, and patients usually feel better within weeks. For a daily wage laborer, rickshaw driver or domestic worker, each clinic visit means lost income and travel costs, and once symptoms fade the pressure to stop going is strong. Interrupted treatment risks relapse, continued spread to family and coworkers, and drug-resistant TB, which is far longer, harder and costlier to treat.
The burden falls heaviest on crowded urban settlements and poor rural districts, where undernutrition, cramped housing and late diagnosis all feed transmission. Patients often first visit private practitioners or pharmacies and lose weeks before being tested. Government nutrition payments and free drugs exist, but they do not replace wages lost on visit days, and stigma leads some patients to hide their illness from employers and neighbors. Support that brings treatment close to home and work, and checks that every dose is taken, is what turns a free prescription into a cure.

Organization
Operation ASHA · India
US IRS EIN (US affiliate: Operation Asha NFP) · No. 20-3852112
Founded 2006 · Headquarters: New Delhi
Delivers community-based TB treatment and adherence support to low-income patients.
How they work: Operation ASHA sets up treatment points inside existing community spaces, such as shops, temples and small clinics, and trains local people to run them, so patients can take medicines near home at hours that fit their work. It developed eCompliance, a fingerprint-based system that records each dose and alerts staff when one is missed, prompting a home visit from a counsellor. The organization works with the government TB program, which supplies the drugs, and screens patients' contacts to find new cases.
Track record: Founded in 2006, Operation ASHA had treated 75,719 drug-sensitive TB patients in India and Cambodia by 2016, reporting a 3% treatment default rate.
