TB Community Screening Program

Funds mobile X-ray screening units reaching communities without access to formal TB diagnostic clinics, in a country among the world's eight highest-burden nations for the disease.
Why this matters in Nigeria
Tuberculosis in Nigeria is concentrated among the people least likely to reach a diagnostic clinic: farmers in remote local government areas, residents of crowded urban settlements, and families living in camps for internally displaced people. A persistent cough is easy to dismiss as a cold or malaria, and a trip to a facility with an X-ray or a rapid molecular test can cost a day's income plus transport. Many people who are sick are never tested, and they keep passing the infection to others at home and at work.
National notifications have risen sharply, reaching about 440,000 cases in 2025 according to the Federal Ministry of Health, yet officials say many infections are still missed. Closing that gap depends on taking screening to people rather than waiting for them to arrive. A chest X-ray can flag likely TB within minutes, including in people who do not yet have obvious symptoms, which makes it one of the most efficient ways to find cases before the disease advances or spreads through a household.

Organization
KNCV Nigeria · Nigeria
Founded 2001 · Headquarters: Abuja
Runs community TB screening with mobile digital X-ray units.
How they work: In its Wellness on Wheels work, KNCV's mobile teams have set up in a community space, registering each person and taking a digital chest X-ray inside the truck. Artificial-intelligence software (CAD4TB) scores each image, and anyone with a high score gives a sputum sample for a rapid GeneXpert test. People who are diagnosed receive initial medication and are referred to a local facility, where the local government TB supervisor follows their treatment. The work has been carried out with the national TB program and state ministries of health.
Track record: KNCV's Wellness on Wheels mobile digital X-ray units screened 16,206 people in Cross River State by April 2021, identifying 1,305 presumptive and 187 confirmed TB cases.

Giving in Nigeria
Girls' education and basic health are recurring concerns in Nigeria, where an estimated 10.2 million children are out of school. Causes here fund coding and digital-skills classes for girls in Lagos and separate school toilets for girls, whose absence is a documented factor in dropout at puberty. Health work covers mobile TB screening in one of the highest-burden countries and research into affordable sickle cell care. Rural boreholes and small business loans for women entrepreneurs complete the list, with WaterAid Nigeria and local groups such as Pearls Africa Foundation as partners.
