Why this matters in Jordan

Roughly four in five Syrian refugees in Jordan live outside the camps, renting rooms and apartments in cities and towns such as Amman, Irbid and Mafraq. The arrival of hundreds of thousands of people after 2011 pushed up rents in the northern governorates, and many families still live in substandard housing: unfinished buildings, basements, or overcrowded flats with damp and poor sanitation.

Rent is usually the largest monthly expense, and refugee incomes are low and irregular. Work permits are limited to certain sectors, much work is informal and seasonal, and aid has shrunk as international funding has fallen. Families who fall behind take on debt to landlords and shopkeepers, move repeatedly, or send children to work. Some Syrians have gone home since the fall of the Assad government in December 2024, but many cannot return safely or have no house left to return to, and they still need stable housing while they decide.

What your gift pays for

  • Cash-for-rent payments that keep vulnerable refugee households in secure housing
  • Upgrades to substandard units, such as windows, doors, sanitation and insulation
  • Written lease agreements negotiated with landlords to give tenants security
  • Counseling and legal advice for tenants facing eviction or disputes

Organization

Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) Jordan · Jordan

Brønnøysund Register Centre, Norway (parent: Norwegian Refugee Council) · No. 977538319

Founded 2012 · Headquarters: Amman

Provides cash-for-rent and housing support for Syrian refugees in host communities.

How they work: NRC's housing work has often been built around landlords: it pays to finish or upgrade incomplete and substandard buildings, and in return owners house refugee families rent-free or at reduced rent for an agreed period. Cash-for-rent support is targeted using vulnerability assessments, and NRC's legal teams provide information and counseling on tenancy, civil documentation and work permits. Shelter staff check that homes meet basic standards before families move in.

Track record: In Jordan since 2012, NRC assisted 16,277 people through shelter and settlements programmes in 2025; its work includes cash-for-rent programmes in host communities.

Giving in Jordan

Since 2011, Syrian refugees have lived in Jordanian host communities where housing costs have risen sharply, and that shared life frames all four causes. The Norwegian Refugee Council provides rent subsidies, a second fund provides food, rent support and Ramadan and Eid aid through Islamic Relief, and Caritas Jordan distributes winter blankets and heating fuel through its centers and volunteers to refugees and local households alike. A research fund at the King Hussein Foundation studies long-term refugee health to inform regional planning.

4 causes are listed in Jordan, each with its own verified organization. $283,856 has been distributed to causes in Jordan since 2021.
