Why this matters in Sudan

The war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, which began in April 2023, has caused the world's largest displacement crisis and confirmed famine. The Famine Review Committee of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification confirmed famine in Zamzam camp in North Darfur in 2024, and later in El Fasher and Kadugli, cities cut off for long periods by fighting and siege.

Under siege the ordinary food system stops working. Traders cannot bring goods in, the price of what grain remains climbs out of reach, farmers cannot plant and markets close. Humanitarian convoys need permission from armed parties and safe routes that are often refused or attacked, and some areas can be reached only intermittently. Getting food through whichever route opens, as quickly as possible, is often the only way to reach families before malnutrition turns deadly, especially for young children.

What your gift pays for

  • Emergency rations moved by the fastest available route into besieged areas
  • Specialized nutritious foods to prevent and treat malnutrition in young children
  • Cash or vouchers for families in areas where markets still function
  • Fuel, storage and logistics to stage deliveries close to cut-off areas

Organization

World Food Programme (WFP) Sudan · Sudan

UN agency

Founded 1963 · Headquarters: Port Sudan

UN agency delivering emergency food and cash assistance across Sudan, including in areas at risk of famine.

How they work: WFP moves food by road convoy within the country and across borders, including from Chad, and negotiates access with the parties to the conflict. It distributes rations, cash and specialized nutrition products through local partners and community structures. WFP also manages the UN Humanitarian Air Service, which carries aid workers and light cargo for the wider humanitarian response. Operational details are not published here for safety.

Track record: In December 2025 WFP reached 3.6 million people in Sudan, including 1.2 million in areas facing famine risk; 2025 transfers totalled 325,000 tonnes of food and US$146 million.

Giving in Sudan

The causes listed for Sudan respond to a civil war that has collapsed much of the formal health system and cut supply routes into besieged areas where famine has been confirmed. Medecins Sans Frontieres keeps mobile surgical units running, the World Food Programme delivers emergency food into cut-off areas, and the Norwegian Refugee Council provides shelter and essential items for newly displaced households. UNICEF distributes insecticide-treated bed nets against malaria, which remains a heavy burden alongside the conflict.

4 causes are listed in Sudan, each with its own verified organization. $305,008 has been distributed to causes in Sudan since 2021.
