Why this matters in India

Trains pull into New Delhi and Old Delhi stations from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and beyond, and some carry children traveling alone. They leave home after beatings, a parent's death, failed exams or the pull of the big city, and within days many are sleeping on platforms, picking rags, washing dishes at roadside eateries or sniffing solvent to blunt hunger. Traffickers and labor contractors know where to find them.

The legal framework exists on paper. Under the Juvenile Justice Act, a Child Welfare Committee must decide where a child in need of care goes, and the preferred outcome is a safe return home. In practice, a frightened child may give a false name or village, phone numbers are missing, and government children's homes are crowded. Returning a child properly takes patient counseling, tracing across state lines, a check that the family is safe, and follow-up after the child is home. Without an organization doing that work, the station platform becomes the default.

What your gift pays for

  • Night shelter beds, meals, clothing and hygiene supplies for newly arrived children
  • Counselors who build trust and gather the details needed to trace a child's family
  • Travel costs for escorted trips home and follow-up visits after a child is reunified
  • Schooling and medical care for children who stay in shelter while tracing continues

Organization

Salaam Baalak Trust · India

Registered public trust, Delhi · No. 7654

Founded 1988 · Headquarters: New Delhi

Delhi-based trust running shelters and family restoration for street and runaway children.

How they work: Salaam Baalak Trust starts at the station. Outreach workers at contact points near major railway stations meet children soon after arrival, offer food and first aid, and invite them to a shelter. Counselors then work on each case with the Child Welfare Committee, and family tracing runs alongside schooling, health care and, for older youth, skills training. The trust also runs city walks guided by young people who once lived on the streets, which give them income, public-speaking skills and a way to tell their own stories.

Track record: Founded in 1988, the trust reaches some 5,000 children a year through five 24-hour shelters and outreach contact points in Delhi that repatriate runaway children to families.

Giving in India

Scale defines the causes listed for India, which accounts for roughly 25 percent of global TB cases. One fund supports community TB treatment points and adherence support; others address falling groundwater, monsoon floods, degraded watersheds and irrigation for smallholder cooperatives. Social causes reach children living on city streets and workers held in debt bondage, and a central-kitchen fund carries forward the long-standing Hindu practice of giving free food, serving mainly schoolchildren. Partners include Operation ASHA, WaterAid India and International Justice Mission.

8 causes are listed in India, each with its own verified organization. $439,066 has been distributed to causes in India since 2021.
