Why this matters in Canada
Specialists are concentrated in a handful of urban teaching hospitals, so patients in northern, rural and Indigenous communities often learn that the cardiologist, oncologist or pediatric surgeon they need is a day's travel away. Provincial health plans cover the consultation itself but generally pay little or nothing toward flights, accommodation and meals, and the travel assistance that does exist is often limited to particular regions or conditions. For a family on a modest income, a single round trip can consume a large share of a month's earnings, and a course of treatment may require several.
Long waits add to the strain. Patients who cannot afford to travel postpone or miss appointments, which can push treatment further back while the condition worsens. Many must also bring an escort, doubling the cost, or lose wages for the days away. Help with the logistics and cost of getting to care keeps people from abandoning treatment that is free in principle but out of reach in practice.
What your gift pays for
- Flights for patients who live far from the specialist or hospital treating them
- Hotel stays near treatment centers during multi-day assessments or procedures
- Ground transport and meals for patients and any escort they are required to bring
- Staff time to book and coordinate each trip around confirmed appointment dates
Organization
Hope Air · Canada
Canada Revenue Agency (charity BN) · No. 119042299RR0001
Founded 1986 · Headquarters: Toronto
Charity providing free travel for Canadians who must travel far from home for medical care.
How they work: Hope Air books and pays for travel for people in financial need who must leave their community for medically necessary care covered by their provincial plan. Patients, or health workers on their behalf, request a trip once an appointment is confirmed, and staff arrange commercial flights, ground transport, hotel stays and meals as needed. The charity relies on partnerships with airlines and hotels, and on volunteer pilots for some routes.
Track record: Since its founding in 1986 Hope Air has arranged over 140,000 free flights for Canadians travelling to medical care far from home.

Giving in Canada
Waiting times, housing costs and the opioid crisis connect the Canadian causes. Hope Air helps patients cope with a median 28.6-week wait from GP referral to specialist treatment. A rent bank supports households where full-time minimum-wage work does not cover housing, and A Way Home Canada intervenes early with young people at risk of homelessness. Supervised consumption sites operated by PHS Community Services Society, including Insite in Vancouver, respond to the world's second-highest opioid death rate.
