Why this matters in Madagascar

The Grand Sud, covering regions such as Androy, Anosy and Atsimo-Andrefana, is semi-arid and far drier than the rest of the island. Most families grow cassava, maize and sorghum and keep cattle or goats, relying on short, erratic rains. Repeated droughts, made worse by strong winds that bury fields in sand, have caused successive failed harvests, and the recurring hunger has its own name in the local language, kere.

The south is also remote and poorly connected. Roads are few and often impassable, markets are thin, and food prices jump when harvests fail. Families respond by selling cattle and tools, eating seed stock and migrating, which leaves them less able to recover each time. National safety nets have expanded but cannot reach every household. Food assistance carries families through the lean season, while work on water points and land, and cash released ahead of forecast droughts, leave them better placed when the next dry year comes.

What your gift pays for

  • Food rations or cash for families through the lean season before harvest
  • Food or cash in exchange for work on water points, land restoration and other community assets
  • Nutrition products to prevent and treat malnutrition in young children
  • Trucking of food to remote villages over roads that flood or wash out

Organization

World Food Programme (WFP) Madagascar · Madagascar

UN agency

Founded 1964 · Headquarters: Antananarivo

Provides emergency food assistance to drought-hit households in the Grand Sud.

How they work: WFP works with the national disaster management office and the government's nutrition office, combining emergency distributions with programs meant to blunt the next crisis. These include school meals that use locally grown food, food or cash in exchange for work on community assets such as water points and land restoration, and anticipatory action, in which drought forecasts trigger cash payments before harvests fail.

Track record: In June 2024 WFP assisted about 858,347 people in Madagascar, as 1.3 million faced acute food insecurity in the drought-hit Grand Sud and Grand Sud-Est.

Through the World Food Programme, this fund provides food assistance, nutrition support and drought-resilience work, combining immediate relief with longer-term support. It is presently the sole cause listed for Madagascar; more may be added once other partners there have passed vetting.

This is currently the only cause we list in Madagascar. $82,308 has been distributed to causes in Madagascar since 2021.
