Funds research into affordable screening and treatment for sickle cell disease.
Why this matters in Nigeria
More babies are born with sickle cell disease in Nigeria than in any other country, and most are never diagnosed at birth. Without early identification, children miss simple protections such as daily penicillin, vaccines and malaria prevention, and many die in early childhood from infection or severe anemia. Those who survive face painful crises, strokes and organ damage, often managed by families paying for hospital care out of pocket.
Proven tools exist but remain out of reach for many. Newborn screening is not routine in most public hospitals, confirmatory laboratory tests are costly and concentrated in cities, and hydroxyurea, a daily medicine that reduces crises, is not consistently available or affordable. Health insurance covers only a small minority of the population. Research on low-cost screening, point-of-care testing and practical treatment protocols for primary care is the route to reaching children in smaller towns and rural areas, where most cases go unrecorded.
What your gift pays for
- Screening of newborns and schoolchildren using low-cost testing methods suited to ordinary clinics
- Studies on affordable treatment protocols, including hydroxyurea use in local clinics
- Genotype awareness and counseling sessions for young people and couples
- Training for primary health workers to recognize and refer affected children
Organization
Sickle Cell Hope Alive (SCHA) Foundation · Nigeria
Corporate Affairs Commission (Nigeria) · No. CAC/IT/NO 45557
Founded 2012 · Headquarters: Ibadan
Nigerian foundation working to reduce the burden of sickle cell disease.
How they work: The foundation's president, Professor Adeyinka Falusi of the University of Ibadan, has framed its work around screening, public education and policy advocacy. It encourages young people to learn their genotype early so they can make informed decisions about starting a family, and it has pressed the federal government to make newborn screening mandatory, to place genotype testing at immunization points, and to cover sickle cell care under national health insurance.
Track record: Founded in 2012, the foundation reports 5,000+ people screened across 100+ schools by 2022 and over $500K funded in research partnerships as of 2018.

Giving in Nigeria
Girls' education and basic health are recurring concerns in Nigeria, where an estimated 10.2 million children are out of school. Causes here fund coding and digital-skills classes for girls in Lagos and separate school toilets for girls, whose absence is a documented factor in dropout at puberty. Health work covers mobile TB screening in one of the highest-burden countries and research into affordable sickle cell care. Rural boreholes and small business loans for women entrepreneurs complete the list, with WaterAid Nigeria and local groups such as Pearls Africa Foundation as partners.
6 causes are listed in Nigeria, each with its own verified organization. $441,629 has been distributed to causes in Nigeria since 2021.
