Funds subsidized meal delivery for elderly residents living alone on fixed pensions in rural areas with shrinking populations and closing local shops.
Why this matters in Japan
Kochi Prefecture on Shikoku has one of the oldest populations in Japan, and many residents live in mountain and coastal villages that young people left decades ago. An older widow in such a village may live alone, no longer drive, and find that the nearest grocery store and the local bus route have both closed. Researchers call people in this position shopping refugees, and their diets tend to narrow when fresh food becomes hard to reach.
The national pension provides a modest basic income, and many rural women who worked on family farms or in small shops receive little beyond the basic amount. Public meal and care services are generally aimed at people already assessed as needing care, so healthy older people living alone often fall outside them until a fall or illness makes them dependent. Regular delivered meals, with someone checking at the door, sit in the gap between independence and formal care.
What your gift pays for
- Subsidies that bring the price of a delivered dinner within reach of a basic pension
- Nutritionist-planned dinners for older people who live alone and rarely cook
- Delivery runs to outlying villages where commercial services rarely go
Organization
Kochi Co-op · Japan
Headquarters: Kochi
Consumer co-operative delivering nutritionist-planned dinners to elderly households, with daily wellbeing check-ins.
How they work: Kochi Co-op is a member-owned consumer cooperative, and its dinner delivery follows a model used by co-ops nationwide: the same staff member arrives at about the same time on the same weekdays, so changes in a person's condition are noticed quickly. Under watching-over agreements with local authorities, delivery staff who notice something wrong, such as no answer at the door, pass their concerns to municipal offices so help can be sent.
Track record: By February 2015 Kochi Co-op had signed 2 community watching-over agreements, under which co-op delivery staff report concerns about elderly residents they visit.

Giving in Japan
Demographic change lies behind every Japanese cause on the list. Rural seniors living alone on fixed pensions receive subsidized meal delivery and regular home visits, in areas with the country's highest rates of unattended deaths among older people. The National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology conducts dementia research as case numbers rise with an aging population. Florence, a Japanese nonprofit, expands subsidized childcare to ease a shortage of caregiver capacity that leaves some mothers isolated.
4 causes are listed in Japan, each with its own verified organization. $364,226 has been distributed to causes in Japan since 2021.
