Why this matters in Brazil

Many Brazilians started work as teenagers to help support their families, in cane fields, kitchens, building sites and city markets, and never finished school. The gap is widest in the Northeast and North and among Black and rural adults, whose completion rates still trail those in the South and Southeast. Without a secondary certificate, adults are shut out of many formal jobs, technical courses and the public-service entrance exams that require one.

The public system offers an adult track, Educação de Jovens e Adultos (EJA), but enrollment in it has fallen for years and many municipalities have cut evening classes. Students who work long shifts struggle with rigid timetables, long bus rides and teaching designed for children. Evening programs that compress the curriculum, respect adult experience and lead to a recognized certificate give working adults a realistic way to finish what they started.

Organization

Fundação Roberto Marinho · Brazil

Brazil CNPJ (Receita Federal) · No. 29.527.413/0001-00

Founded 1977 · Headquarters: Rio de Janeiro

Offers courses (Telecurso) for youth and adults to complete basic education.

How they work: The foundation's Telecurso method is built around the telessala: one specially trained teacher acts as a mediator across all subjects, using short video lessons and printed books as the starting point for group discussion and project work. It usually operates through partnerships with state and municipal education departments, companies and other institutions, which host the classes and help students reach the official exams that certify completion.

Track record: A partner in Telecurso since its 1978 launch, the foundation has run distance-learning secondary courses for students who did not complete school, including the 2008 Novo Telecurso.

Giving in Brazil

Inequality and the Amazon frame the three Brazilian causes, which work at very different scales. Evening classes give adults who left school early to work a second chance at finishing secondary education. Indigenous-managed forest reserves facing illegal logging receive ranger patrols and satellite monitoring through Instituto Socioambiental. A research fund backs work on neglected tropical diseases that mostly affect low-income populations and draw little global funding, with the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative as partner.

3 causes are listed in Brazil, each with its own verified organization. $357,787 has been distributed to causes in Brazil since 2021.
