Why this matters in Thailand
When commercial logging was banned in 1989, thousands of working elephants and their mahouts lost their livelihood almost overnight. Many moved into tourism: riding camps, shows, painting displays and, for a time, begging on city streets. Today the number of elephants in captivity is roughly comparable to the number left in the wild, and most captive animals are privately owned.
Years of carrying riders and heavy saddles, standing chained on hard ground and performing tricks leave lasting damage, including foot infections, spinal and joint injuries, eye problems and wounds from training hooks. There is no state pension for a captive elephant. Once an animal is too old or injured to earn money, an owner may have no means to feed it, since an adult eats an enormous amount of vegetation every day, and veterinary care for an animal this size is specialized and expensive. A sanctuary is one of the few options that keeps a retired elephant fed, treated and living among others of its kind.

Chiang Mai sanctuary rescuing and caring for elephants from tourism and logging.
How they work: Save Elephant Foundation lets rescued elephants live in social groups on open land instead of giving rides or performances; visitors watch, and help with feeding and bathing, rather than ride. The foundation also works beyond its own park. Through its Saddle Off program it encourages camp owners to stop riding and move to observation-based tourism, keeping elephants with their mahouts and home communities while ending the most harmful practices. The park also shelters large numbers of rescued dogs, buffalo and other animals.
Track record: Elephant Nature Park opened in 1998 with 34 rescued elephants; by 2016 founder Lek Chailert had rescued a total of 200 distressed elephants across its facilities.
