Builds separate sanitation facilities for girls in public schools, addressing a documented driver of girls dropping out at puberty.
Why this matters in Nigeria
Girls reaching puberty in Nigerian public schools often find no toilet they can use in privacy, no water to wash, and nowhere to change or dispose of a sanitary pad. Many stay home during their periods and fall behind, and some eventually stop attending altogether. Shared or broken latrines with doors that do not lock also leave girls exposed to harassment, a worry parents weigh when deciding whether to keep a daughter in school.
Nigeria has one of the largest out-of-school populations in the world, with girls in the north-east and north-west most affected. Public schools are crowded, and maintenance budgets for facilities are small or absent, so toilets built decades ago have fallen into disrepair. Separate, lockable blocks with water, lighting and a place for menstrual hygiene address a practical reason for absence that fee waivers and enrollment drives do not reach.
What your gift pays for
- Separate girls' toilet cubicles with lockable doors, lighting and a private changing space
- Solar-powered boreholes or rainwater tanks so toilets and handwashing points have running water
- Pad banks, disposal bins and incinerators that support menstrual hygiene on site
- School WASH clubs and caretaker training to keep blocks clean and in working order

Charity Commission for England and Wales (parent: WaterAid UK) · No. 288701
Founded 1995 · Headquarters: Abuja
Builds female-friendly WASH facilities and toilets in Nigerian public schools, such as in Bwari (FCT) and in Lagos.
How they work: In schools, WaterAid Nigeria pairs construction with hygiene education and day-to-day management. It designs female-friendly toilets with input from girls themselves, then supports school-based management committees, teachers and student hygiene clubs to run cleaning rosters and report repairs. It works with State Universal Basic Education Boards and education ministries so that its designs can be adopted in public school building programs, and uses completed sites to argue for wider government investment.
Track record: In February 2025 WaterAid Nigeria handed Oregun Junior High School in Lagos female-friendly toilets with a pad bank, a solar-powered borehole and handwashing stations.

Giving in Nigeria
Girls' education and basic health are recurring concerns in Nigeria, where an estimated 10.2 million children are out of school. Causes here fund coding and digital-skills classes for girls in Lagos and separate school toilets for girls, whose absence is a documented factor in dropout at puberty. Health work covers mobile TB screening in one of the highest-burden countries and research into affordable sickle cell care. Rural boreholes and small business loans for women entrepreneurs complete the list, with WaterAid Nigeria and local groups such as Pearls Africa Foundation as partners.
