Distributes emergency food rations in regions where armed conflict has displaced farming communities mid-planting season.
Why this matters in Niger
The Tillabéri region in western Niger lies along the borders with Mali and Burkina Faso, the area known as the tri-border zone, where armed groups linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State attack villages, kill farmers and impose levies on harvests. Families flee with little more than they can carry, often in the weeks when they should be sowing millet and sorghum, so they lose both this season's food and next year's.
Displaced people usually move to towns or other villages where host families are themselves poor and grain stores are thin. Insecurity cuts roads and closes markets, and the period since the July 2023 military takeover, with border closures and reduced foreign aid, has made supplies harder and costlier to move. Emergency rations that reach newly displaced families in their first weeks keep them from selling what little they own and leave them able to return to farming when conditions allow.

Organization
World Food Programme (WFP) Niger · Niger
UN agency
Founded 1968 · Headquarters: Niamey
Provides emergency food via a Rapid Response Mechanism to newly displaced people in Tillaberi.
How they work: Through the country's Rapid Response Mechanism, WFP provides emergency food to newly displaced households soon after they arrive, while partner agencies cover shelter, water and household items. Beyond emergencies, WFP runs a large resilience program in which communities restore degraded land with half-moon basins and other water-harvesting works, alongside school meals and nutrition support, coordinated with government services.
Track record: In May 2025 WFP assisted more than 1.4 million people in Niger, distributing 841.7 tonnes of food and US$1.9 million in cash transfers.

Giving in Niger
Women and girls are the focus of two of the three causes in Niger. Plan International runs community outreach in a country with one of the world's highest recorded rates of child marriage, and CARE Niger funds shared processing equipment for women-run agricultural cooperatives. The third, through the World Food Programme, distributes emergency food rations where armed conflict has displaced farming communities in the middle of planting season, part of wider insecurity across the Sahel.
3 causes are listed in Niger, each with its own verified organization. $242,705 has been distributed to causes in Niger since 2021.
