Funds pre-departure legal briefings for women migrating for domestic work abroad, an area with documented exploitation risk.
Why this matters in Nepal
Remittances from workers abroad equal roughly a quarter of Nepal's economy, and a growing share of those workers are women, many heading to the Gulf states as domestic workers. For years the government has swung between banning or restricting women from domestic work in the Gulf, citing abuse, and partly lifting those bans. Restrictions have not stopped women from going; many travel via India or on visit visas, outside the official system and without the protection of a registered contract.
Domestic workers are among the most exposed migrants. In several Gulf countries they have historically been excluded from labor law, live in their employer's home, and depend on that employer for their legal status under sponsorship systems known as kafala. Common problems include unpaid wages, confiscated passports, excessive hours and physical or sexual abuse. A woman who leaves knowing her contract terms, her rights, her embassy's number and how to seek help is far better placed if something goes wrong.

Organization
Pourakhi Nepal · Nepal
Founded 2003 · Headquarters: Kathmandu
Nepali NGO of returnee women migrant workers offering pre-departure information and support.
How they work: Pourakhi was founded and is run by women who returned from working abroad, so much of its outreach is peer to peer: returnees talk with aspiring migrants and their families about real conditions. Alongside its airport information booth and shelter, it offers counseling, help with wage and abuse complaints, support with rescue and repatriation through government channels, and reintegration help for returnees. It also advocates with government on safe migration policy for women.
Track record: Founded in 2003, Pourakhi has run a 24-hour information booth for departing migrant workers at Kathmandu airport since 2012 and a shelter for returning women migrants.

Giving in Nepal
Mountain geography and migration run through the four Nepali causes. One places teaching Fellows in rural public schools, including in earthquake-affected districts, where qualified teachers are scarce; another protects Himalayan watersheds strained by glacial melt and erosion. Two focus on women: legal briefings before women leave for domestic work abroad, and legal aid for widows whose inheritance rights are contested under customary land practices. Partners are mostly Nepali organizations, including Teach For Nepal, Pourakhi Nepal and Women for Human Rights, alongside WWF Nepal.
4 causes are listed in Nepal, each with its own verified organization. $386,692 has been distributed to causes in Nepal since 2021.
