Funds shared processing equipment for women-run agricultural cooperatives.
Why this matters in Niger
Women in rural Niger do much of the work of turning harvests into food and income: threshing and pounding millet, pressing groundnuts into oil and kuli-kuli, and preparing cowpeas for sale. Done by hand, these tasks take hours each day and yield little to sell. Mechanized mills, oil presses and threshers sit in market towns, if anywhere, and women rarely have the cash or credit to buy them.
The economy rests mostly on rain-fed farming and herding, both highly exposed to drought, and the country sits at or near the bottom of the UN Human Development Index. Women seldom own land or equipment in their own names, and formal banks are largely absent from rural areas. Equipment owned by a women's group cuts hours of labor, lets members sell processed goods at better prices, and can earn extra income by charging other villagers to use it.
What your gift pays for
- Grain mills, threshers or groundnut oil presses owned and run by women's groups
- Simple shelters, storage space and maintenance tools that protect shared equipment from dust and weather
- Training in machine operation, repairs and setting fair user fees for group members
- Bookkeeping and business planning support so groups can manage income and replace equipment over time
Organization
CARE Niger · Niger
IRS (EIN) (parent: CARE USA) · No. 13-1685039
Founded 1974 · Headquarters: Niamey
Runs Mata Masu Dubara women's savings groups that fund shared income-generating and processing activities.
How they work: Mata Masu Dubara groups are self-managed: members meet regularly, save a set amount, keep their own records, and lend from the pooled fund at rates they agree among themselves. Once a group is established, CARE and local partners add training in literacy, enterprise and leadership, and groups often federate into networks that can take on larger collective investments. Shared processing equipment builds on this foundation, since the group already has rules and a record of managing money together.
Track record: CARE Niger launched the Mata Masu Dubara women's savings and loan groups in Maradi in 1991; groups of about 30 women pool savings and lend to each other.

Giving in Niger
Women and girls are the focus of two of the three causes in Niger. Plan International runs community outreach in a country with one of the world's highest recorded rates of child marriage, and CARE Niger funds shared processing equipment for women-run agricultural cooperatives. The third, through the World Food Programme, distributes emergency food rations where armed conflict has displaced farming communities in the middle of planting season, part of wider insecurity across the Sahel.
3 causes are listed in Niger, each with its own verified organization. $242,705 has been distributed to causes in Niger since 2021.
