Why this matters in Ghana

Rural households without a nearby protected source still draw water from streams, dugouts and ponds, especially in the Northern, Savannah, Upper East and Upper West regions, where the dry season lasts for months. Guinea worm was eventually eliminated after decades of effort, but other water-related diseases, including diarrhea, typhoid and schistosomiasis, remain common where people share sources with livestock.

Small, scattered communities are the hardest to serve. Piped schemes are uneconomic for villages of a few hundred people, and district assemblies, which hold responsibility for rural water under the decentralized system, have limited budgets for new boreholes. Some communities sit over hard rock where drilling often fails, so surveys and repeat attempts add cost. A borehole with a handpump remains the most practical option for these places, provided there is a community structure to maintain it.

What your gift pays for

  • Geophysical surveys to find water-bearing rock before drilling in hard-rock areas
  • Drilling, casing and fitting handpumps on new boreholes in unserved communities
  • Water-quality testing before each new borehole is handed over for use
  • Training for community water and sanitation committees in maintenance and fee collection

Organization

Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) · Ghana

Government body

Founded 1998 · Headquarters: Accra

Ghana's national agency for rural and small-town water supply.

How they work: CWSA follows a community ownership and management model: communities request a facility, contribute toward its cost and form a water and sanitation committee that runs and maintains it after handover. The agency sets standards, supports the district assemblies that plan rural water services, contracts private drillers, and promotes trained area mechanics who keep handpumps working.

Track record: As of December 2021 CWSA had provided 29,785 boreholes with handpumps to rural communities and small towns in Ghana, plus 1,215 limited mechanised boreholes.

Giving in Ghana

Practical skills and basic infrastructure are the common thread for Ghana. Public secondary schools receive shared lab equipment so physics and chemistry can be taught hands-on, and young people who left school early gain apprenticeships in skilled trades. Beyond the classroom, boreholes replace unprotected surface water in rural communities, and coastal fishing towns organize plastic cleanups. Partners are Ghanaian bodies, from CAMFED Ghana and OIC Ghana to the Community Water and Sanitation Agency and the grassroots group Plastic Punch.
