Rural Water Access Fund

Funds borehole construction in rural communities lacking reliable piped water infrastructure.
Why this matters in Nigeria
Rural Nigerians are far less likely than city dwellers to have a safe water source near home, and piped networks outside the larger towns are rare or have long stopped working. Families depend on streams, open wells and privately drilled boreholes whose water is sold by the jerrycan. In the dry season streams shrink, and the price of bought water rises just as farm income is at its lowest.
Responsibility for rural water sits with state Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agencies (RUWASSAs) and local governments, but their budgets are thin, and many boreholes drilled under past programs now stand broken. Hand pumps fail when no one is paid to fix them; motorized systems fail when fuel or power runs out. New water points last longest when they come with a clear plan for who runs them, how repairs are paid for and how the water is kept clean between source and cup.
What your gift pays for
- Geophysical surveys and drilling of boreholes in communities chosen together with state water agencies
- Solar or motorized pumping, overhead tanks and water kiosks where several households can collect at once
- Setup and training of community water committees that manage tariffs, savings and repairs
- Hygiene promotion so clean borehole water stays clean through collection, storage and use

Founded 1995 · Headquarters: Abuja
WaterAid Nigeria works with state rural water agencies and communities to build and maintain water points and sanitation in rural areas.
How they work: WaterAid Nigeria works closely with state RUWASSAs and local government WASH departments, typically co-delivering projects with them so that public agencies own and maintain the systems afterward. Its model combines infrastructure with community management: water committees are trained to collect user fees and arrange repairs, and kiosks give a fixed point where payment and maintenance are organized. It also advocates for larger and better-spent state and federal budgets for rural water and sanitation.
Track record: In Enugu State in 2023, WaterAid Nigeria built motorized boreholes with kiosks serving over 2,000 people in Ukwuinyi and over 2,500 in Umuogili-Amufie.

Giving in Nigeria
Girls' education and basic health are recurring concerns in Nigeria, where an estimated 10.2 million children are out of school. Causes here fund coding and digital-skills classes for girls in Lagos and separate school toilets for girls, whose absence is a documented factor in dropout at puberty. Health work covers mobile TB screening in one of the highest-burden countries and research into affordable sickle cell care. Rural boreholes and small business loans for women entrepreneurs complete the list, with WaterAid Nigeria and local groups such as Pearls Africa Foundation as partners.
6 causes are listed in Nigeria, each with its own verified organization. $441,629 has been distributed to causes in Nigeria since 2021.
