Funds video-consultation equipment for rural clinics in counties that have lost their only hospital in the past decade, connecting patients to specialists hours away.
Why this matters in the United States
Rural hospital closures over the past 15 years have clustered in Southern states, in counties where residents are older, poorer and more likely to be uninsured than the national average. When the hospital goes, so do the visiting specialists, the imaging and lab services and often the emergency department, leaving a clinic or a pharmacy as the main point of care.
For patients, that means long drives for cardiology, psychiatry, endocrinology or a follow-up with a cancer specialist. Older people who no longer drive, parents who would lose a day's wages and people with disabilities postpone or skip those visits. A video link in the local clinic, with a nurse present to examine the patient and share readings, lets a specialist hours away consult without the trip. Payment rules for telehealth have loosened, but small clinics often lack the equipment, connectivity and staff time to set it up.
What your gift pays for

- Broadband upgrades for clinics with slow or unstable connections that disrupt specialist video calls
- Nurse and coordinator time to schedule sessions and assist patients during remote consultations
- Training for clinic staff on telehealth equipment, privacy and referral processes
Organization
HRSA Federal Office of Rural Health Policy (Telehealth Network Grant Program) · United States
Government body
Founded 1987
Federal program that funds telehealth networks connecting rural clinics and patients to specialty care.
How they work: The Telehealth Network Grant Program does not deliver care itself. The Federal Office of Rural Health Policy, part of the Health Resources and Services Administration, makes competitive multi-year awards to networks of providers, typically a hub such as a hospital or health system linked to rural clinics and other sites. Grantees use telehealth to widen access to services and report on outcomes, and the office also funds telehealth resource centers that give technical assistance.
Track record: In August 2016 the Telehealth Network Grant Program made 21 awards totaling $6.2 million, about $300,000 a year each for up to three years, to community health organizations.

Giving in the United States
Where public systems leave gaps, the American causes on this site step in: rural towns that have lost their only hospital or cannot afford to fix aging water lines, cities where rents have outrun shelter capacity, and counties hit hardest by opioid overdoses. Other funds back veterans, survivors of domestic violence, foster youth aging out of care and Hispanic college students, many of them first-generation. Partners range from national nonprofits such as Meals on Wheels America and the American Red Cross to a federal rural health office and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
24 causes are listed in the United States, each with its own verified organization. $2,628,640 has been distributed to causes in the United States since 2021.
